Men's Tennis Loses Down-to-the-Wire Home Showdown with ONU

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – With the sun sinking in the West and painting a pretty picture in the sky, John Carroll and Ohio Northern put on quite the show on the courts of the Short Family Tennis Center.

The Blue Streaks and Polar Bears duked it out over the course of over three hours, with the key Ohio Athletic Conference match coming down to the wire.

Ohio Northern outlasted John Carroll in the end, concluding a nonetheless fun evening of tennis with a 5-4 decision.

Doubles put JCU behind the 8-ball. ONU got the first victory with the No. 2 doubles win, though JCU evened it up at No. 1, courtesy of Logan Langovsky and Grant Sarnowski. The dominant duo fired up an 8-2 victory. But the Polar Bears critically won the third doubles to carry a 2-1 lead into singles.

A quick No. 5 singles win upped the Polar Bear lead, but Langovsky continued his fantastic day. The Green native strode to a 6-2, 6-2 conquest in impressive fashion. Dylan Westmeyer then evened the score. At No. 6 singles, the graduate student did the trick with two satisfying 6-4 set wins.

Anthony Markello battled hard at No. 3 singles, but couldn't force a third set. Following a 6-3 opening loss, he dropped a 7-3 tiebreaker to lose the second set, 7-6. But no matter, as JCU soon tied it thanks to Phillip Gorun. The Pittsburgher outdueled his foe at No. 4 to the tune of a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 final.

And so, it all rested on the shoulders of Grant Sarnowski.

The fiery senior certainly gave it his all. He dropped the opening set, 2-6, but battled back with a fierce 7-5 victory in the second. As the sunlight faded and the bright lights of the Short Family Tennis Center illuminated the play, Sarnowski stood strong. But ultimately, Ohio Northern's Peyton Specht outlasted him in a 6-3 final.

Despite JCU's first conference defeat of the season, plenty is still ahead, starting with a road match on Tuesday. The Blue Streaks will travel to Grove City for a non-conference contest.
