Blue Streaks Successfully Host Dan Caschera Classic

The Blue Streaks' depth was on display, as JCU finished two teams in the top three.
CHARDON – The two days of the 2024 Dan Caschera Classic were as different as can be.

Sunday's round was defined by biting cold and a bitter wind that took no prisoners. Monday's round featured more springlike conditions with some warmth and sun.

The Blue Streaks did not win the home tournament at Sand Ridge Golf Course, but the team flexed its depth, with the JCU "B" team earning second and the JCU "A" team notching third.

Kenyon College won the 13-team tournament, which featured six other schools from the Ohio Athletic Conference and five North Coast Athletic Conference sides.

JCU's top team opened with a 308 on Day 1 before faltering with a 315 on Day 2, concluding with a team score of 623 on the Par 72, 6,698-yard course in Chardon.

Austin Malley led the "A" team with a scoreline of 76-78-154 to tie for eighth. An impressive eagle on the imposing 531-yard 18th hole provided an inspiration for the second day, as the freshman turned in four birdies on the front nine on holes 1, 5, 6, and 8. His red-hot pace of three-under-par through nine holes could not be sustained in the back nine, but was still impressive as he finished +10 for the tournament.

Kamden Mowry was the next finisher on the "A" squad, tying for 12th place with a 79-76-155. The freshman tabbed a trio of birdies on the second day, wrapping up the front nine with a two-under-par 34. Jacob Hazen was the third finisher on the squad, concluding with a 78-79-157. A pair of birdies on each day helped him.

The final score from the top team was provided by Wade Boyle (77-82-159). A birdie on the No. 3 hole on Sunday was a highlight. The Roman-Canning Award winner, Zach Brinks, was the final man with a 77-85-162.

JCU's second team started with a 314 before firing up a 303 on Day 2, finishing with a final mark of 617.

For the "B" team, London Hoyser was the star. The Pittsford, NY native tied for sixth with a line of 77-76-153. A pair of birdies on the back nine kept him low on Sunday, while a solid back nine preserved his work on Monday, as he only bogeyed the 13th hole and stood par on the other eight holes.

Anthony Nuzzo tallied a tie for 12th with Mowry, carding a 79-76-155. Two birdies down the stretch kept him at +1 on the back nine, insulating himself nicely from a few bogeys here and there. Jack Gerborg was the next placer on the team, compiling a 81-75-156. The sophomore birdied the 18th hole, far from easy, to provide a nice late touch.

Grant Lumley's was the final score for the "B" team with a tally of 77-80-157. The veteran braved the elements well on Sunday, with strong efforts on 6th, 14th, and 18th holes doing the trick. Anthony Krakowiak rounded out the squad, constructing a 83-76-159. His strong finish was keyed by a -1 on the front nine on Day 2, with huge back-to-back birdies on the 4th and 5th holes.

Mount Union's Brian Myers won medalist honors with a tally of 71-74-145.

After a very busy weekend of golf, the Blue Streaks now will rest and recharge for the test ahead. The OAC Championships await, with River Greens set to host the tournament from Friday, April 26 through Sunday, April 28.
