Softball Fights Hard but Loses Pair of Close Home Games to Muskingum

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – On a chilly day at Bracken Field, John Carroll Softball welcomed perennial Ohio Athletic Conference contender Muskingum University.

The Fighting Muskies showed why they're a frequent contender for the conference title, though the Blue Streaks showed good fight in 1-0 and 5-1 losses.

With the wins, the Muskies need just one victory in their last four conference games to clinch a spot in the OAC Tournament.

While the Blue Streaks did drop a pair, there were bright spots. Danielle Orendi struck out 10 in game one, her second time hitting double digit K's this year. Kaylyn Odelli reached base safely in both games with hits, extending her reached base streak to 18 games and her hitting streak to 16.

Game 1
A pair of singles in the opening frame opened the door for an early Muskingum score. With runners on the corners, the Fighting Muskies sent the runner from first, who Melissa Smith caught stealing. But the runner from third dashed home, marking the first run on the scoreboard. But after that, Danielle Orendi found her stride.

Meanwhile, a walk by Elaina Rodriguez and a single by Kaylyn Odelli put two runners aboard for JCU in the third, but the Fighting Musies escaped unharmed.

John Carroll loaded the bases with one out in the fifth. Rodriguez walked before Odelli and Smith clipped back-to-back singles. But Madelyn Thomas got a pair of outs to sneak out of it. JCU got a pair in scoring position in the sixth inning next, but Thomas again got out unscathed.

Orendi continued to cruise in the circle all the while. The Pittsburgher and pride of JCU Sports Information racked up strikeout after strikeout. Orendi struck out the side in the seventh to give her 10 K's for the day and keep the door open for a JCU comeback.

Odelli tabbed a leadoff liner over the third baseman's head to start the seventh.

Orendi accepted the tough-luck loss, though in limiting Muskingum to one run, she accomplished a nice feat. Orendi became just the third hurler all year to pitch a complete game against the Fighting Muskies and hold them to one run or fewer.

Game 2
Muskingum opened the second contest in a similar way, by hanging a crooked number on the board. The Fighting Muskies notched four hits in a row, including back-to-back doubles to start, ultimately getting two runs across.

But this time, JCU authored a response. Kendall Trunzo got aboard to start the inning, and later came across on a Melissa Smith RBI single up the middle, halving the lead.

Muskingum critically added to the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth. A hit by pitch and a pair of singles did the damage to extend the visitors' advantage to 4-1.

Kristin Dems otherwise kept the Fighting Muskies, leaving the door open for a JCU comeback. Casey Cash checked in for the seventh inning and allowed a leadoff homer but did not allow any other damage. It didn't matter, as JCU couldn't threaten a comeback.
