Jack Gerborg enjoyed a great day for the Blue Streaks on Day 1.
WEST LAFAYETTE – Every year, the Ohio Athletic Conference Golf Championship is a marathon, not a sprint. But you gotta like the start for John Carroll Men's Golf.

After a 27-hole Day 1, the Blue Streaks stand in first place with a team tally of +5.

This year's format is particularly lengthy, with a 27-hole Friday round, 27-hole Saturday, and 18-hole Sunday. This is exactly where the Blue Streaks wanted to be after the opening day, up by two strokes over defending OAC champ Otterbein.

Jack Gerborg and London Hoyser steered the ship for John Carroll on Friday, tying for fourth.

Gerborg enjoyed a red-hot start in his first nine holes, highlighted by birdies on the second and third holes, to open with a 34 (-2). The back nine provided more difficulty, but birdies on the 12th and 17th holes helped him finish with an even 72 for the first 18. In his last nine of the day, the Avon native finished strong. His last seven holes were near perfect, with back-to-back birdies to end the day at one-under-par.

Hoyser played even-keeled all day, avoiding many mistakes. A pair of birdies set him up for a 35 (-1) on the front nine, as he conquered the 8th hole well with a birdie. His best work was done on the 12th hole, as the freshman eagled No. 12, a 504-yard, par-5. The Pittsford, NY native ran into a few bogeys in his final nine, but birdies on 1, 5, and 7 ensured he finished with a one-under-par for his first day.

Zach Brinks enjoyed a great day, also playing a significant role. The senior nabbed birdies on three of his last four holes on the front nine, roaring for a 34 (-2) to start. Birdies on the 17th and 18th holes concluded his back nine with a 37 (+1). The St. Xavier grad cooled off a bit later, but still finished at one-over-par for his Friday, good enough for a seventh place tie.

Austin Malley performed aptly in his first championship experience for JCU. The freshman opened with a three-over-par effort before firing up a pair of birdies on the back nine for an opening round of 76 (+4). A birdie on the par-5 first hole helped the Venetia, PA native finish at one-over-par in his final nine. His five-over-par places him in a tie for 14th following the opening day.

Wade Boyle rounded things out for John Carroll. The freshman finished his opening day with a +19.

Day 2 will start at 9 am, with 27 holes to golf for the Blue Streaks.
