Baseball Celebrates 17 Seniors on Sunday at Schweickert Field

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – On a Senior Day celebrating 17 fantastic student-athletes, John Carroll Baseball fought hard but came up on the losing end at Schweickert Field.

The Blue Streaks lost a 10-7 battle that lasted nearly three-and-a-half hours.

JCU celebrated the following 17 seniors with a final trip around the bases after the game: #0 Jamon Higley, #3 Erik Daugenti, #8 Bryce Holt, #9 Sylvan Wiley, #13 Spencer McDonell, #14 Brandon Albright, #17 Logan LaMere, #20 John Gavric, #26 Connor Mayle, #27 Chase Diosy, #35 Jackson Birt, #38 Brandon Ferdinando, #40 Luke Chlystek, #47 Samuel Basso, #52 Christian Bedolla, #57 Mason McCurdy, and #99 Joe Heckman.

Luke Chlystek provided a fantastic start. The senior smashed his second homer in as many days, rocketing a leadoff dinger over the fence in right field. But from there, the bats went quiet for JCU for a bit.

In the meantime, the Wooster had no trouble getting things going after Sylvan Wiley kept the visitors off the board in the first two frames. The Fighting Scots batted around, scoring five runs to roar ahead, 5-1.

The Blue Streaks got the bats going again in the fourth inning, with Michael Persichetti and Erik Daugenti tallying back-to-back hits to open the frame. A couple batters later, Jackson Birt celebrated Senior Day in style. The Northbrook, Illinois grad ripped a standup triple down the right field line, plating two runs. The hit marked his second of his season and the first triple of his collegiate career, and importantly trimmed the deficit to two.

After Brandon Ferdinando kept Wooster off the board in the fifth, JCU got things rolling in the bottom of the frame. George Haracz led things off with a single. Following a strikeout, JCU laid down perfect back-to-back bunt singles by Connor Mayle and Michael Persichetti. Haracz scored on a throwing error, and Mayle came around on an RBI groundout by Erik Daugenti. Wooster escaped there, but it was a brand new ballgame at 5-5.

The Fighting Scots quickly replied with a 3-run sixth frame and got one more in the seventh. A 2-run Jack Harmon double pulled JCU within two entering the eighth. Wooster added an insurance marker in the eighth.

Wooster's Thomas Gfell shut the door on any Senior Day comeback hopes, marking Wooster's second win over JCU this season.
