JCU Softball Comes Up Just Short in Pair of Losses to Capital

SOUTH EUCLID – After a wild week of weather, Mother Nature cooperated enough for a pair of games at Normandy Field on the campus of Notre Dame College.

A chilly, yet sunny day provided the scenes for John Carroll Softball's doubleheader vs. Capital to open Ohio Athletic Conference play. While the Blue Streaks provided two excellent efforts, the ball just didn't bounce JCU's way for the Morgan's Message Dedication games.

John Carroll's comeback in the opener fell just short, 3-1. And after coming back to tie the second game in the seventh, the Comets tallied a pair of runs in the eighth to survive, 7-5.

Game 1
Capital opened the scoring in the top of the first inning with a quick run, but Danielle Orendi bore down after that, settling in quite nicely.

Capital did not get a runner in scoring position again until the fifth. The Comets scratched across a couple of unearned runs, critically moving ahead with a 3-0 lead.

Lexie Genovese doubled with two outs in the fifth, but was stranded on second. Kaylyn Odelli got in scoring position in the sixth, singling, stealing second, and getting to third off a foulout. But again she was left aboard.

John Carroll was successful in getting a run across in the seventh. Gabby Hougan got aboard with an error to start the inning, and advanced to third on a deep Serena Paterno groundrule double. Genovese scored Hougan on a sacrifice fly, but the John Carroll rally ended there.

Orendi finished with 12 strikeouts in 6 innings of work, a new career best. Casey Cash worked a scoreless seventh.

Game 2
After Capital started strong with two runs in the opening frame, JCU got one back. Kaylyn Odelli singled, quickly got to second on a stolen base, and advanced to third on a groundout. Melissa Smith sent her home on a sacrifice fly.

John Carroll snagged the lead in the second with a pair of runs. Serena Paterno got aboard via an error, then came around to score on a huge Emily Graves triple down the right field line. Laney Karpowicz singled to score Graves for the lead. The advantage was short-lived, however, as Capital tied it with a run in the third.

The Comets plated two in the fifth inning to get back in front, 5-3. Excellent double plays by the JCU in the third and fifth definitely helped JCU's cause.

Isa Crespo drew an inning-opening walk in the seventh to start JCU's comeback. Karpowicz singled up the middle to set a pair of runners on base. An Odelli single plated Crespo, leading to a Capital pitching change. The bullpen didn't stop the bleeding, as Elaina Rodriguez dropped in a single between several fielders in shallow left center to score Karpowicz. Unfortunately, Capital ended the rally there to send the game to extras.

The Comets managed to get two runs across in the eighth by playing some small ball, and JCU could not author a response this time.

John Carroll will continue on in OAC play, heading to Heidelberg on Wednesday for a twinbill.
