Women's Tennis Bows Out of OAC Tournament Semifinal

LIMA – The 2024 campaign came to a close in the semifinal round of the 2024 Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament for John Carroll Women's Tennis on Saturday.

The hosts of the tournament, Ohio Northern University, downed John Carroll at the Westwood Tennis and Fitness Center, 5-0.

With the defeat (which was closer than the score), the Blue Streaks finish off the season at 10-9 overall.

Doubles play offered ominous portent for the Blue Streaks. The Polar Bears won a series of close contests, critically opening with a 5-0 advantage and too large of a hole for JCU to climb out of.

Ohio Northern opened with a win at the No. 3 doubles spot, though Kayley Gimbel and Caroline Chandler kept it close with an 8-4 final. Felicity Kolb and Sarah Sgambati also did not go quietly at No. 2, but also accepted a defeat, 8-5.

The top doubles spot proved to be the closest contested. Madeline Kavenagh and Evelyn Deren forced a tiebreaker, but the Polar Bear top team outlasted him in a 7-2 tiebreaker for an 8-7 set score.

The Polar Bears sent the visitors to the brink with a win at the top singles spot. Kavenagh lost a 6-0, 6-2 decision. The final straw was the No. 2 spot. Deren dropped a 6-3, 6-3 loss to end the day.

The defeat marks JCU's third straight season that has ended in the semifinal round of the conference tourney. All three losses have come at the hands of the Polar Bears.
