UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – The new leader of the John Carroll Cross Country and Track & Field programs is a familiar face.

Daniel Tutskey has been promoted to Director of Cross Country and Track and Field at JCU.

For the past four seasons, Tutskey served as the associate head coach for track & field and an assistant coach for cross country.

"I am very proud to announce the promotion of Daniel Tutskey to Director of Cross Country and Track and Field here at John Carroll," said Vice President for Athletics and National Engagement Brian Polian '97. "As we were conducting our search, it became more and more evident that our best candidate was within our family."

Tutskey has done a phenomenal job over the last several years with the Blue Streaks under previous Head Coach Kyle Basista. Tutskey created a culture of excellence with the sprinters and the jumpers in particular at both the Ohio Athletic Conference and national levels.

During the 2023-24 season alone, Tutskey's athletes achieved 19 All-American honors, 26 All-OAC accolades, 21 All-Region selections, 10 school records, and 7 individual OAC Championships.

Across his four seasons, JCU has notched 28 OAC Championships, 35 school records, 44 All-Americans, 56 national qualifiers, 113 All-Region honorees, 134 All-OAC performances, among many other accolades.

Notably, during the 2022-23 indoor track season, Tutskey was named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Great Lakes Region Men's Assistant Coach of the Year.

Tutskey previously spent stints as head track & field coach at Ursuline College (2015-19), assistant women's track and field coach at North Central College (2012-15), assistant coach at Plainfield East High School (2008-12), and assistant coach at Augustana College (2004-08).

Tutskey is an accomplished runner in his own right, as well. A star at the University of Wisconsin La Crosse, Tutskey still holds several Eagles program records. A few years ago, Tutskey won both the 100m and 200m dashes in the 40-44 age group at the 2021 USA Track & Field Masters Outdoor Championships.

His experience and knowledge of the sport make him a perfect fit to lead the Blue Streaks' programs.

"Thank you Kyle Basista and the athletes for bringing me aboard in 2020. Thank you to Brian Polian for giving me the opportunity to lead the Cross Country and Track & Field programs into the future," said Tutskey. "I'm excited to continue building the program and sustaining championship level success. I'm extremely blessed to work with the athletes we have in our program. They are John Carroll Cross Country and Track & Field. Onward On!"

"Daniel is an expert in his field, having elevated the standard here for sprinters and jumpers," Polian said. "In his time with the Blue Streaks, he has proven himself as a developer of talent, guiding over 40 All-Americans.  Most importantly, he is the type of person that we want leading our young men and women.  The support for him from within the program was enthusiastic and consistent.  We believe that Daniel and his staff will carry on and grow the proud tradition of JCU Cross Country and Track and Field!"

The search for a new distance coach for the program is underway.
