"A" Team Recap

GRANVILLE – You can't ask for a much better start to the fall for John Carroll Men's Golf.

The JCU "A" squad took part in the Ted Barclay Invitational hosted by Denison University on Saturday and Sunday. The Blue Streaks competed against some of the region's top teams at Denison Golf Club in Granville, Ohio.

In the first competition under first-year Head Coach Jeff Pawlowski '91, the Blue Streaks tied with Wittenberg for first place and Daniel Donahue earned medalist honors.

The Blue & Gold finished as the team runners-up on the basis of a fifth-man score playoff. Wittenberg carries a No. 14 ranking in Division III via the GCAA preseason poll after notching a 15th place effort at the 2024 NCAA Championships.

On Saturday, the Blue Streaks raced off to a hot start, as evidenced by nine birdies in the first 10 holes. The Donald Ross designed course offers plenty of challenges on the back nine, however, which slowed down JCU. The men of Carroll stood in fourth after the opening day.

Thanks to a tally of 70 (-1), Donahue led JCU and positioned himself well for the second day. Austin Malley followed with 72 (+1), Michael Keefe and Andrew Schwartz both came in with 76 (+5), and London Hoyser carded a 77 (+6). Wade Boyle 72 (+1) and Kamden Mowry 75 (+3) played well as individuals.

"We talked a lot on Saturday evening about only being at the halfway point of the tournament," said Donahue. "There was plenty of golf remaining and we had to be focused Sunday."

With an afternoon tee time, the Blue Streaks again started strong. Seven birdies and an eagle over the first 10 holes put the Streaks into contention for the lead with the toughest stretch of holes remaining. Learning from previous mistakes, JCU improved by six strokes over the final five holes to post the lowest team score of the day. JCU's team tally of 290 bested the field by five shots.

After waiting for the other teams to finish, Donahue celebrated his medalist honors with a final mark of 138 (-4). Boyle 143 (+1) shot even par on Sunday to tie for fifth as an individual and Keefe 145 (+3) rallied with a two-under-par 69 to finish tied for ninth. Hoyser tabbed a three-over-par 74 to finish at 151 (+9).

"The final 4-5 holes are tough and we needed to play those holes well. I am very proud of the team's grit down the stretch," Coach Pawlowski stated.

"B" Team Recap

DOVER – The Blue Streaks performed aptly at the Gatorade Collegiate hosted by the College of Wooster.

The two-day competition offered a great chance for the John Carroll Men's Golf "B" team to get rolling.

The Blue Streaks hung around the top of the pack, finishing in fourth place, one stroke back of third and seven behind team champion Wooster.

For starters on Saturday, the Blue Streaks hung around well, only five shots separating the leader. Carson Meyer and Justy VonLehmden guided the JCU cause, both recording marks of 73 (+1). Max Devins 74 (+2), Jack Gerborg 76 (+4) and Anthony Krakowiak 78 (+6) all followed closely.

The Blue Streaks stood in fifth heading into day two with a team mark of 296. Playing as individuals, Paul Litrenta and Parker Barrett both shot 72 (E).

Windy conditions made scoring tougher on Sunday, but John Carroll still managed to make up some ground. The Blue Streaks tied for low team score of the day and moved up to fourth. Gerborg led the way with a 71 (-1) to finish in the top 10, tying for eighth with a final mark of 147. Meyer tied for 10th, carding a 75 (+3). Also notching a final score of 148, Devins stayed even-keeled with an identical 74 (+2). Krakowiak provided JCU's final mark on Sunday with a 77.
