Canfield, Ohio - The women's cross country team headed down to the freshly unveiled Gorby Family Championship Cross Country Course for Youngstown State's Inaugural Cross Country Meet.

Despite rolling hills, tough footing, and hot weather the Blue Streaks notched a second place finish, scoring 71 points, barely beating Slippery Rock. Slippery Rock placed 3rd, coming down to the tie breaker. John Carroll won the tie breaker 94-103. Youngstown State took the win at their home meet with 48 points. 

Pack running is a typical tactic for the Carroll women, and with an 18 second spread, it was key to their success today. The top runner for the women was junior Alyssa Vis, who placed 12th in her collegiate cross country debut with a time of 19:26.17. Vis noted, "I came in with low expectations; I dealt with injury last year and didn't race cross country. I think that's what helped me—having a calm mindset and not putting pressure on myself."

Finishing second for the team was Abby Schroff, who placed 14th with a time of 19:38.96. Just a second behind was freshman Anne Rea, who finished 15th in 19:39.33. Next for the Blue Streaks was senior Ellie Kitsmiller, who placed 16th with a time of 19:39.86. Rounding out the top five was Annie Higgins, who finished 18th with a time of 19:44.8.

The Blue Streaks will make the trek to Bethlehem, PA to compete at the Paul Short Run hosted by Lehigh University on October 5th.
