Women's Soccer Drops Road Match to Talented Misericordia Squad

DALLAS, Pa. – For the past two Sundays, John Carroll Women's Soccer has been tested.

After playing opponents the day before, JCU has faced off with defending conference champions and NCAA Tournament teams.

Try as they might, the #8 Blue Streaks have fallen in both contests, including today's 1-0 defeat at host Misericordia University.

A tally in the 55th minute proved enough for Misericordia, hosting the Cougar Classic. The Blue Streaks will come home from the five-and-a-half hour trip with a 2-2 record.

Some injuries have afflicted JCU this season, leading to some different starting rotations. But many backbone members soldiered on today, as Madeline Martin, Jennifer Crowley, Alli Malinky, and Kathryn Shaffer all played the full 90-minute contest.

While the Cougars did tab an early shot, the Blue Streaks offense poked and prodded at the hosts' defenses. Emily Patrzyk tabbed a shot in the opening two minutes, and the Blue Streaks enjoyed one stretch of creating pressure, starting with an Abby Smith shot on target.

But for most of the first half, the Cougars created the action, testing the waters plenty. Martin and her defense did plenty of work in front, keeping things square entering the break. Misericordia held a 15-5 advantage in shots in the first half, though just 3-2 in shots on goal.

While Patrzyk tabbed a shot in the opening minute of the second stanza, it was the Cougars who got on the board first. In the 55th minute of the match, Misericordia at last bested the Blue Streaks, finding a way to get the job done.

The Blue Streaks did not waver in their attempts to even the score. But the Cougars seemed to be striking more on the offensive side, holding onto control of the game. But that nearly changes in the 75th minute, as after shots on goal by Abby Walker and Julia Niehaus earlier, Patrzyk scared the hosts. The Twinsburg native seemed to have caught the defense unawares, but Misericordia stood as an impenetrable line of defense.

The only booking of the game occurred about a minute later, when a collision sent Martin to the turf. Thankfully the sophomore goalie proved to be okay and finished out the match. But the Cougars did not lay off the gas pedal, firing plenty of shots towards the goal down the final minutes, including one that hit the crossbar in the 84th minute.

Misericordia finished with a 28-10 advantage in shots, though only 6-3 in shots on goal. Misericordia has not yet allowed a goal in 5 matches.

Next Up

Following the loss to a challenging foe, the Blue Streaks will look to hit rest and recharge heading into a more quiet weekend. Ohio Wesleyan is on the calendar next on Saturday, September 14 in a night match in Delaware.
