Strong Start Propels Blue Streaks Past Comets

BEXLEY - The John Carroll women's basketball team earned a massive victory on Saturday afternoon by defeating the Capital Comets 71-64. With the win, the Blue Streaks improved to 11-2 on the year and 5-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). JCU now holds sole possession of second place in the conference.

Heading into the game, JCU and Capital had identical records of 10-2, 4-1 in the conference. A strong first half led the way, as the Blue and Gold outscored Capital 40-24 in the first 20 minutes of action.

Midway through the first quarter Capital held a 9-6 edge, but the John Carroll defense took over and it would be the last lead Capital held. The Blue Streaks held the Comets scoreless for over four minutes and went on a 12-0 run, which featured 10 points from the duo of Carmen Heuker and Graci Semptimphelter.

In the second period, Capital drilled a three pointer to cut the John Carroll lead to 22-19. However, the John Carroll defense once again stepped up. This time the Blue Streaks went on a 13-0 run over the course of nearly four minutes forcing Capital to shoot 0-9 from the floor in that span.

At the break, the Blue and Gold held a 12-3 advantage on second chance points and forced Capital to shoot 8-35 (22.8%) from the field.

Capital made a push in the third quarter cutting the lead to five heading into the fourth quarter. Ava Ryncarz put together a strong fourth period scoring six of her team-high 20 points, including four free throws to ice the game.

The Blue and Gold scored 23 points off of turnovers, 12 of which came in the fourth period.

It was a team effort victory, as Ryncarz, Heuker, Semtimphelter and Carly Perusek all scored in double-figures. Perusek added 14 rebounds, nine of which came on the offensive glass.

Next up, John Carroll will travel to Tiffin, Ohio for a battle against Heidelberg University on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
