Otterbein Upends Women's Basketball Late in Westerville

Carly Perusek guided the JCU effort with a double-double

WESTERVILLE – The rematch of the John Carroll vs. Otterbein Women's Basketball showdown was a near mirror image of the first bout early on. While the Blue Streaks flipped the script down the stretch, the Cardinals did just enough to split the season series.

John Carroll's final possession could not provide the tying points, so the Blue Streaks finished with a 69-67 defeat at the Rike Center.

The defeat marks JCU's third straight, dropping the Streaks to 13-5 on the year.

The Cardinals enjoyed some early home cooking, getting out to a 17-11 lead. JCU did close out the quarter on a mini 4-0 run in the final minute and change.

The momentum did not carry into the second stanza, as Otterbein opened on a 9-2 run. A pair of Ava Ryncarz free throws briefly stopped the bleeding, but Otterbein continued scoring, upping the lead to 32-19 with 3:54 left. John Carroll finished out the final two minutes on a modest 6-3 run, slimming the margin to single digits heading into half.

Back-to-back triples by Otterbein coming out of half hurt JCU's comeback efforts. The Blue Streaks rebounded with a 10-4 run, capped off by a Carly Perusek layup plus a free throw. In the final three minutes, JCU started drawing fouls in bunches to earn trips to the line. JCU scored 10 points on free throws in the final 2:40 of the period, slimming the gap to 55-51 entering the fourth.

JCU quickly evened the score in the first minute with Ryncarz and Perusek jumpers. Otterbein fired up a 6-2 run, until Ryncarz nailed a triple and Kaylie McKenney drained a layup to grab JCU's first lead since the first quarter. JCU's lead stretched to three points, 67-64, with 1:21 remaining. However, from there, the Cardinals dominated down the stretch. The Cardinals commenced a 5-0 run, and while the Blue Streaks had the ball with 23 seconds and a chance to tie, the final possession went for naught.

Ava Ryncarz led all scorers with 17 points. Carly Perusek also posted an impressive effort with 13 points and 11 rebounds, her third double-double of the season.
