UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – An experienced veteran of higher education is joining the John Carroll Athletic Department.

Kore Sharpley has been hired as Assistant Athletic Director for Student Success and Leadership.

Sharpley has worked at JCU since 2022 as an Academic Success Advisor, with five years of previous experience in a similar role at Kent State University. Sharpley was also a decorated wrestler at The Ohio State University.

"I am very excited to welcome Kore Sharpley into the Blue Streak athletics family," said Brian Polian '97, Vice President for Athletics and National Engagement. "He is a perfect fit for this role in our administration, combining experience as an elite level athlete in college and his professional background in advising.  He is going to be an asset to our student-athletes because he knows the demands that they face and he also understands the academic environment and rigors on our campus."

For the last couple years, Sharpley made a strong impact on John Carroll students as an Academic Success Advisor. In this role, Sharpley aided students with academic and career planning, taught an Advising for Success class, and worked on individual improvement plans with students. His work helped to keep students and student-athletes on the right track academically.

In addition to his work helping students, Sharpley has served on the Leadership Legacy Award selection committee, represented the Academic Success office and the University at recruiting events, and served as Staff Advisor for Black Students in Action (BSA).

"JCU's athletic department has a long established tradition of excellence, both in the classroom and in athletic competition," said Sharpley. "I am truly honored to collaborate with this distinguished team of administrators and coaches to support our student-athletes in reaching their full potential."

Before JCU, Sharpley worked as an Academic Advisor at Kent State University from July 2017 to February 2022. At KSU, Sharpley monitored student academic progress and advised students on how to meet their academic goals, conducted athletic eligibility audits in compliance with NCAA rules, served on the academic reinstatement review committee, and much more.

A graduate of The Ohio State University, Sharpley was a successful wrestler at the Division I level. Twice, the Shaker Heights native qualified for the NCAA Championship Tournament, earning a top-10 ranking in his weight class along the way. In high school, he was a state champ wrestler for the Shaker Heights Raiders.

After securing his degree in Sociology & Criminology from OSU in 2001, Sharpley worked in various positions across Northeast Ohio, including as a Behavioral Health Specialist (Positive Education Program), Case Manager (Murtis Taylor Human Services System Program), and Intervention Specialist (Solon City Schools).

In 2015, Sharpley returned to school to attain a Master of Education degree from Baldwin Wallace University, earning his degree in 2017. During his time at BW, he worked as a Graduate Intern for Student Athlete Services. He also served as an advisor for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), helped with NCAA compliance, and established a peer mentoring program.

Houston Texans General Manager Nick Caserio '98, a JCU Hall of Fame quarterback, helped to fund this position in 2022. Michael Hollins '17 was the first to serve in this role, departing in the fall to serve in a similar position at Kent State.

"My goal is to ensure that every student-athlete receives the guidance and resources they need to succeed, leaving no one behind," Sharpley said. "I believe that providing exceptional value and fostering relationships built on trust are essential to creating a lasting impact. With that in mind, I am dedicated to partnering in the ongoing development of a culture of success."
