Men's Soccer Begins NCAC Era with Conquest of Oberlin

Dylan Halm provided the winning goal on a beautiful effort

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – The opening foray into North Coast Athletic Conference play resulted in a much-needed win for John Carroll Men's Soccer.

In the first NCAC matchup in program history, the Blue Streaks did enough to get the home victory.

Thanks to a Dylan Halm early in the second half, John Carroll emerged with a 1-0 victory over Oberlin College at Don Shula Stadium.

The early going did not lack for chances. Oberlin and JCU traded shots in the 8th and 9th minutes, Dylan Halm firing a direct shot on goal for JCU. Zalan Onodi burst a laser high right after charging forward from his backline spot.

The opportunities dried up from there for John Carroll. Missing a few key players, the hosts struggled to maintain possession for long periods. Oberlin took advantage, looking to pressure JCU. Owen Szucs experienced busy stretches, including a nice save in the 25th minute.

Following a no doubt spirited halftime pep talk by Head Coach Dejan Mladenovic '06, '25G, the Blue Streaks came out of the break roaring. Following a close call early in the half, the Blue Streaks at last got on the board in the 50th minute.

Struggling to clear the ball on several occasions, Oberlin made a fatal mistake in allowing the ball to get to Dylan Halm's foot. Once on his boot, the ball seemed to stick like glue, as the sophomore beat several defenders, bobbing and weaving to find an opening. The Revere grad fired home a gritty goal for the 1-0 lead.

Not content with just the one goal, John Carroll kept up the pressure as the half continued.

Dante Rajaie tabbed a shot oh-so-close to providing insurance in the 71st minute, with the ball tailing just wide left.

Despite JCU's best efforts, including a beautiful looking cross from Luka Pranjeta to Guilherme Wanderley and a couple offsides calls, the Blue Streaks could not add any breathing room. That made the late Oberlin setpieces extra nerve-wracking. But John Carroll emerged unscathed.
