Women's Soccer Steamrolls Tigers in NCAC Opener

The Blue Streaks netted three goals in the first half to run away with the match

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS — In their first ever North Coast Athletic Conference matchup, John Carroll Women's Soccer (6-3-1, 0-0 NCAC) took control of the game early and held on to defeat the DePauw Tigers (6-3-1, 0-0 NCAC), 5-0.

The Blue Streaks came into the game coming off a 4-0 loss to #8 University of Chicago ending their 6-game winning streak. DePauw sits deadlocked with the Blue Streaks for third in the NCAC, putting massive implications on the first in-conference game of the season.

John Carroll put some early pressure on the Tigers in the first few minutes, but DePauw's defense was able to hold strong, but briefly. Back-and-forth both teams went for the first 15 minutes until Abby Smith drove the ball down the sideline and sent a cross in. The ball would find its way in the back of the net off the foot of a DePauw Tiger to make it 1-0 JCU.

The offense for JCU continued to flow. Emily Patrzyk fired in a corner, then Kathryn Shaffer sent the ball over to Brooke Berkowitz, who smashed it into the goal for a 2-0 Blue Streak advantage.

The Tigers started to make a push for a comeback as a cross came into Lily Ault who just missed the header left. But the push would be quickly answered by JCU as two freshman Molly Brown and Gracie Villwock found each other and slotted another goal for the Blue Streaks.

This score would hold as the Blue Streaks went into with a commanding 3-0 lead after 45 minutes. It was all JCU who led in shots, shots on goals, corners and had one less foul.

It was a quiet second half for both teams through the first 10 minutes of the second half as the Blue Streaks looked to maintain their lead. The backline continued to hold strong for JCU, that momentum would carry over to the offensive side as Molly Brown found Ella Henton who scored off a volley to make it four for JCU. A fifth goal would come very soon, as Shaffer drilled a goal from 50 yards out off a free kick.

Shortly after the JCU goal, DePauw looked to get on the board for the first time, but Madeline Martin stopped her second shot of the match to keep the Tiger scoreless. This score would stand as the Blue Streaks win their seventh of their last eight and move them ahead of the Tigers in the standings and one game closer to second place Kenyon.

A wealth of Blue Streaks entered the scorebook during the lopsided decision, as the team as a whole out-shot DePauw 14-9 and shots on goal 10-4.
