Men's Basketball Bests Berg to Cap off Ron Linhart Memorial Classic

Kasey Hunt's career day led JCU in a second-straight 100-point effort

TIFFIN, Ohio -- The John Carroll Men's Basketball team wrapped up the Ron Linhart Memorial Classic with another win in which they reached the century mark.

This time over the hosting Student Princes of Heidelberg by a score of 103-88.

John Carroll last started a season with two straight wins with 100+ points back in 2021.

Luke Chicone got the scoring started for the Blue Streaks with a free throw and a layup on consecutive possessions. Heidelberg quickly responded and built themselves up a seven point lead and managed to maintain it for about four minutes before a steal and dunk by Kasey Hunt followed by a three pointer of his own cut the lead and gave the Blue Streaks some momentum. Another make from deep by Hunt accompanied by one from Kyle Irwin had the Blue and Gold up six going into the under 12 media timeout.

Coming out of the timeout, layups by Justin Chapman and Chicone pushed the lead to double digits for the first time today with just under 10 minutes remaining in the half. Heidelberg used a pair of triples to go on a 11-1 run to shrink the lead back down to one, however elite rebounding and put back efforts by Hunt and Sean Collins followed by an Aidan Fitzgerald make from deep ballooned the lead back to 10.

The Blue Streaks rode the momentum along with more down low scoring from Collins and Chapman into a 15-point halftime lead.

Despite shooting a poor 4-of-20 from three in the first half, John Carroll was able to have a comfortable lead thanks to a very impressive defensive effort all around, one that caused 18 first-half turnovers.

Heidelberg came out of the break shooting, shooting very well, burying a three on their opening three possessions. Despite that, some great offensive play from the Mentor natives, Chicone and Collins didn't let the lead shrink too much and another Hunt triple got the lead right back to nine.

Coming out of the under 16 media timeout, a Student Princes three was immediately followed by a 9-0 run fully constructed by Chapman and Mike Lamirand to keep the momentum in the favor of the Streaks. A few minutes later Lamirand's second three of the night pushed the lead back to double digits with just under seven minutes left on the clock.

A great run from Fitzgerald, Hunt, and Collins was capped off by another three, this time coming from Collins pushed the lead to 15 with under four remaining.

Heidelberg wasn't able to get the deficit back into single digits as the Blue Streaks head back to University Heights with a 103-88 win.

Despite a subpar shooting performance from deep (9/34) the Blue Streaks never wavered and kept playing their style of ball.

"You miss 100% of the shots you don't take," said sophomore Andrew Taggart. "But luckily the boys kept shooting and they eventually went in, so it all worked out in the end."

Kasey Hunt led all John Carroll scorers with a career-high 20 points.

"Extremely proud of the effort we showed this weekend," said Hunt when asked about the team's effort. "I think we set a great foundation to build on going forward. Really excited to continue to get better and leave our mark on this season."

Luke Chicone followed up with 19 points of his own

Senior Sean Collins also achieved a career high, adding 18 points to the ledger.

Due to exceptional performances this weekend, Hunt and Chicone were named to the All-Tournament team.

"Individual awards are nice but nothing beats going 2-0 on the weekend … It's a new system and we executed it well," said Chicone. "We just need to continue to do so next week and throughout the season."
