Men's Basketball Roars for Victory at Mount St. Joseph to Start Lauren Hill Tip-Off Classic

The Blue Streaks beat the Lions with speed and strong shooting

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- For the fifth consecutive year, the Blue Streaks have started the season 3-0.

A strong second half effort lifted John Carroll Men's Basketball past the Lions of Mount St Joseph with a score of 106-88.

The game could not have had a better start for the Blue Streaks. A pair of Luke Chicone layups and a Kyle Irwin three had JCU up 8-0 less than 90 seconds into the game. However, once the Lions settled in, the game began to turn. Behind a very intense effort on the boards and amazing shooting from behind the arc the hosts quickly took control and built a solid 13-point lead with less than 8 minutes remaining in the half. The following possession ended with Kasey Hunt converting an and-one opportunity that ignited the Blue Streaks' bench and began to change the tone of the game.

Slowly but surely, John Carroll's fast paced style of play began to wear out the Lions. Stop after stop, the Blue and Gold wasted no time getting the ball down the court and into the paint for quick layups. A pair of free throws from Brandon Rose gave the visitors the lead back with 3 minutes to go in the first. The teams ended the half trading buckets but a defensive blunder with the clock winding down led to MSJ getting an easy uncontested layup to head into the break with a 1-point lead.

The halftime talk was simple: The fast play will wear them down, but you still need to crash the boards harder, as the Blue Streaks were getting out rebounded by 10.

The break ended with a fiery speech by assistant coach Pat Moran, reminding the team that they need to have confidence with every shot they take, shots they have taken thousands and thousands of times in their lives.

Coming out of the half, you could tell something had changed in that locker room. A three from Hunt on JCU's first possession showed it and back-to-back threes from Aidan Fitzgerald and Chicone a few possessions later only cemented it.

After a Blue Streak miss from deep a mishap from the Lions sent the ball out of bounds off the Blue Streaks, at least that's what seemed to be happening before Mike Lamirand went flying through the air and into the John Carroll bench to keep the ball in play, a heroic effort that led to a Chicone layup.

"That was awesome, man," said sophomore Michael Condoleon, who was taken out by Lamirand, along with four chairs, during his flight. "Never thought I'd be tackled sitting on a basketball bench, but I would do that every game if needed."

After that play there was never a question who controlled the remaining 17 minutes, it was the Blue Streaks.

Not even two minutes later, Lamirand knocked down a three on back to back possessions off assists from fellow Saint Ignatius graduate Jack Zapolnik to push the lead to 14. The following possession saw Zapolnik get a bucket of his own.

With just under 13 minutes to go, a layup off a euro step that seemed to be in slow motion from Sean Collins pushed the lead to 20 and had the Lions completely overwhelmed.

The hosts were never able to get their deficit under 15 within the time remaining. John Carroll kept the defensive pressure up and continued to score on the fast break.

Kasey Hunt's second triple of the night seemed to be the dagger as John Carroll led by 20 with 4 minutes to go. From there, both sides began to empty their benches.

A steal and layup from Tyree Turner paired with a three by Devin Burgess had their teammates going crazy as the final buzzer sounded.

For the third time this season, the Blue Streaks won the turnover battle by at least 10 as JCU forced 29 turnovers while only giving up seven. Despite losing the rebounding battle by 15, a strong effort on the offensive glass, resulting in 14 offensive rebounds paired with the high volume of forced turnovers granted John Carroll 30 more shots than their opposition, which is always a recipe for success.

Luke Chicone once again led the way in the scoring column for both teams with 25 points on 11-of-20 shooting while also recording 8 assists.

"Great team effort all around, scoring is a lot easier when you have four other threats from all levels surrounding you every time you're on the floor," stated Chicone.

Kasey Hunt recorded his second straight 20-point game in tonight's win.
