Women's Soccer Conquers Big Red to Win NCAC Tournament Championship

The Blue Streaks sweep the NCAC as first-year members of the league, bound for the NCAA Tournament

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – Soccer is traditionally a powerhouse sport in the North Coast Athletic Conference, with the league filled with traditional soccer juggernauts.

In its first year in the NCAC, John Carroll Women's Soccer showed no fear of this, particularly in the NCAC Tournament Final on Sunday afternoon.

The Blue Streaks conquered Denison University, 1-0, on a drizzly day at Don Shula Stadium, conquering the conference in JCU's first year as a member. John Carroll will be the NCAC's automatic qualifier for next week's NCAA Division III Tournament.

"This is a super exciting moment for the program and for the university," said Head Coach Michael Marich. "To start our time in the NCAC by winning the regular season and tournament titles is incredible. The competition was amazing and hopefully we're prepared for what comes next."

The road was not easy, either. While the Blue Streaks won the NCAC regular season crown, John Carroll would need to beat the two teams it lost to in the regular season. On Thursday, JCU bested Kenyon, 1-0. And on Sunday, the Blue & Gold vanquished the Big Red in dramatic fashion. And Denison is most definitely a traditional NCAC powerhouse, with five NCAC Tournament Championships all-time, including in 2022 and 2023.

Brooke Berkowitz played the hero for John Carroll. Following a Julia Niehaus 61st minute throw-in, Berkowitz made a nice run up the left side. From about 20 out, the first year fired a gorgeous arching shot over the head of the keeper and into the back of the net.

The goal was a thing of beauty, most especially since it gives the Blue Streaks the crown in the first year in the new league.

"I'm just really excited I was able to help my team get this far," said Berkowitz. "I'm so glad that our seniors get to keep playing and that this isn't our last game. I can't wait to keep playing with this amazing team in the NCAA Tournament."

The Blue Streaks tabbed the first shot on goal in the fourth minute, as Emma West garnered a promising chance that the goalie grabbed with poise. In response to JCU's early aggression, the Big Red fired a high shot off the crossbar in the sixth minute.

The hosts continued to pressure in the early going, and enjoyed the better of the play as a result. Julia Niehaus and Brooke Berkowitz sent shots on net in the 14th and 15th minutes that nearly got away from Molly Noga, but the Denison keeper prevented any follow-up chances.

The 21st minute featured a flurry of action for the Blue Streaks. Abby Walker started it with a shot on net, which Denison failed to corral. West fired a shot of the goalie's belly, and then Berkowitz tried to finish it but could not. The ensuing corner kick went for naught, as well.

The Big Red nearly got the game's first goal in the 34th minute as the ball nearly trickled past the Blue Streaks. But a pair of Denison players were in the net so nothing came of it. Gracie Villwock responded with a shot on cage in the 38th minute.

At half with the score deadlocked, JCU stood ahead in shots, 8-2, including shots on goal, 6-0.

At the start of the half, Denison got its first on-target shot of the day, but Madeline Martin turned it away. The Big Red came out with urgency and aggression, controlling play to start until JCU responded with a couple chances.

Finally in the 61st minute after plenty of chances, the Blue Streaks came through with Berkowitz's goal.

The Big Red threatened a couple of times down the stretch. The match became more physical, including a couple of Denison yellow cards.

But in the end, no way was John Carroll going to let this victory slip through its fingers.

JCU finished with a 13-7 edge in shots, including 8-3 on goal. Denison was the more physical team with 2 yellow cards and a 14-7 margin in fouls.

Madeline Martin recorded her 9th shutout of the season, tops in the NCAC, and one off tying her program single-season mark from 2023. A quartet of Blue Streaks made the NCAC All-Tournament Team (listed below) including captain Emily Patrzyk winning MVP.

Interestingly enough, this marks John Carroll Women's Soccer's first-ever win over Denison. The Big Red entered with a 12-0-2 advantage in the series history.
