Women's Basketball Beats Bearcats in Final Home Game of 2025

JCU will begin a 5-game roadstand with a 7-1 mark thanks to strong post play

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – A measure of a great team is being able to win when your strength isn't working.

For John Carroll Women's Basketball, the three-ball has been the team's source of strength. Entering tonight, the Blue Streaks ranked seventh in NCAA Division III with 9.6 made 3-pointers per game. Against Saint Vincent, the deep shot wasn't falling.

But on Monday at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center, it didn't matter. The Blue Streaks bore down for a 62-51 victory over the Bearcats to advance to 7-1.

JCU shot just 4-of-22 from downtown tonight, the team's lowest percentage of the season, but by winning the rebounding battle and finishing with a season-high 14 steals, the Blue Streaks pulled out the win.

The hosts seemed in position to be pulling away early, building a 6-point advantage late in the first quarter. But a Saint Vincent triple with 35 seconds to go slimmed the JCU lead to 17-14 entering the second.

A pair of Ava Ryncarz triples plus a Kaylie McKenney and-one upped the JCU advantage, soon to double digits at the 3:20 mark, which led to a Bearcat timeout. A Nicci Finazzo bucket right before the buzzer, confirmed on replay, ensuring JCU stayed comfortably ahead at half, 37-29.

A 5-0 run by the Bearcats coming out of half trimmed the margin to just one possession just four minutes into the third. A Ryncarz triple and a Carly Perusek pair of baskets pushed the lead back into double digits.

While JCU remained cold from deep, Perusek and company proved tough to stop in the post. The Bearcats tried but were unsuccessful in getting back into the game late.

Ryncarz topped the team with 16 points plus 11 rebounds. Perusek starred with 15 points, 11 rebounds, and a team-best 4 steals. Nicci Finazzo's 12-point, 3-steal day also cannot be ignored.

Next Up
John Carroll will now head to the land of the Semptimphelters, traveling to Nashville for neutral two games. The first matchup will be against Williams College on Saturday. Interestingly enough, Saturday's matchup is against Berry College, whom Nick Semptimphelter and the Blue Streaks vanquished this past Saturday in football. These are the final two games of the calendar year for JCU.
