Chicone and Hunt Combine for 65 Points, As JCU Defeats Chatham in JCU Classic

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, OH - The John Carroll men's basketball team completed the JCU Classic with a victory over Chatham 104-94. The Blue and Gold were led by Luke Chicone and Kasey Hunt, as the duo combined for 65 points.

With the victory JCU improved to 8-2 on the year and surpassed the century mark for the fifth time this year.

Early in the game there was a feeling Chicone was going to have an epic game, as the graduate student scored 10 points within the first four minutes of the game and buried two triples.

Jack Zapolnik checked into the game and made an immediate impact by finishing a tough layup. Two possessions later the sophomore drilled a three-pointer and gave JCU a 22-16 edge.

A few minutes later Hunt started getting hot, as the senior connected on a three-pointer from the right wing. On the ensuring possession, Hunt banked in another three-pointer and JCU led 31-23.

Chatham would get hot from the field and take a 45-40 edge with three minutes left in the first half. After trading a few baskets, the Blue Streaks would trail 52-47 heading into the locker rooms.

Needing a spark, Kyle Irwin stepped up. The Mayfield native drilled three three-pointers and finished an and-one layup, as JCU would trail by one point.

The next 12 minutes of action would be back and forth, with the teams trading baskets and the lead never growing to larger than four for either squad.

With 4:25 remaining in the game and the score tied at 94-94, the JCU defense locked in and suffocated Chatham and would not allow another point.

John Carroll led by four with a 1:30 to go and Chicone would hit the dagger. The Mentor native crossed over his defender and hit a step back three-pointer and the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center erupted.

JCU will be back in action next Monday, as the squad heads to Reading, PA. for the Double Tree Holiday Tournament, with games against Stockton University and a team to be determined.
