Blue Streaks Breeze Past Yellow Jackets in Final Hardwood OAC Rivalry Matchup

JCU limited BW to just 55 points in a defensive clinic

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS — John Carroll Men's Basketball flexed its muscles en route to a 82-55 victory over the Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets.

John Carroll came into this contest winners of 14 of their last 15 and in first place in the conference. Facing off against a scrappy and potent offense in the Yellow Jackets, JCU needed to dominate the low block to control the game.

The Blue Streaks' defense played quite well, limiting Baldwin Wallace to just 55 points in an 82-55 victory on Morgan's Message Night.

Baldwin Wallace got off to a lightning fast start, erupting to a 10-3 lead in the first two and a half minutes. Two offensive putbacks from senior forward Henry Raynor got the Blue Streaks quickly within three. JCU continued to crash the offensive glass, as Will Yontek pulled down a board and finished through contact. Both teams traded baskets, but another putback this time from BW put them up 15-13 into the first media timeout.

John Carroll came out of the timeout on fire going on an electrifying 12-0 run in five minutes. David Gentry and Luke Frazier combined for all 12 of those points trading triples and twos. Baldwin Wallace would end the run off a pair of free throws from Ray Ellington. Raynor followed that up with a layup and then both teams went cold from the field heading into the second media timeout.

Both squads came out of the break trading buckets, until Frazier started to take over. The Mentor native hit two free throws, made a pullup jumper and then dished a dime to Raynor for a layup to give JCU a 13-point advantage late in the first. The lead grew even more off a mid-range jumper from Yontek and another triple from Frazier to close the half. The Blue Streaks led 42-27 after the first half of play.

Only five players scored for JCU in the first half. However, the duo of Frazier and Raynor accounted for 26 points between the two of them alone. Will Yontek was dominating on the lower block scoring four points and grabbing six rebounds. The Blue Streaks dominated the glass, out-rebounding the Yellow Jackets 24-11 in the first 20 minutes.

"Last time we played BW, we were able to dominate down low so the message today was to find our bigs in the paint and our guards did a great job of that," Henry Raynor commented on the physical presence the John Carroll forwards put forth in the contest.

Both teams traded buckets to open the half, but a couple of tough buckets in the paint from the Yellow Jackets cut the deficit to 11. Baldwin Wallace got it down to single digits with a layup from Ellington. John Carroll quickly answered with a mid-range jumper from Frazier on the ensuing possession.

After a media timeout, the Blue Streaks continued to gradually grow the lead off of free throws and solid defense. A triple from Chase Toppin and a fadeaway from Yontek capped off a 10-0 run from the Blue Streaks that put them up 20. Baldwin Wallace once again tried to chip away at the lead with back-to-back buckets from beyond the arc from Andrew Griffith and Myles Reynolds. But Will Yontek drained only his second three pointer of the year to put this game out of reach. To put the icing on the cake, Brandon Rose and Omar Abuhamdeh traded triples in the final minute. Sealing a 82-55 victory for the Blue Streaks, their fourth consecutive over the Yellow Jackets.

Three different Blue Streaks hit double figures, with Frazier leading the way with 20 points and eight rebounds. The big man duo of Raynor and Yontek also shined scoring 16 and 12 points respectively and combining for 19 rebounds. Henry Raynor also surpassed 100 career blocks in the victory.

"It is pretty cool to be one of the five guys in John Carroll history to achieve this mark, I'm thankful for my teammates who play create defense and let me clean up the blocks on the other end," Raynor said about his historic achievement.
