Women's Basketball Battles #10 BW Closely, But Loses Late

Ava Ryncarz stood far and above as the top scorer in the game

BEREA – For one final time, John Carroll Women's Basketball faced off with the Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets as Ohio Athletic Conference rivals in the Ursprung Gymnasium.

While a matchup in the postseason is not out of the question, the rivalry showdown felt plenty significant, especially with tournament seeding implications.

John Carroll hung tough against #11 Baldwin Wallace, but the Yellow Jackets made the free throws late to get the win.

The action started evenly before John Carroll raced out to a key run, starting with a Kaylie McKenney layup near the midpoint and ending with a Carly Perusek layup a few minutes later. When the dust settled, JCU's 13-2 run propelled the visitors to a 19-9 advantage. While BW did end the quarter with a pair of buckets, the first quarter was all you could have hoped for as a Blue Streak fan.

A Graci Semptimphelter triple during JCU's first possession of the second quarter extended the JCU advantage to nine. Ava Ryncarz got in on the triple game and hit one of her own to get the margin to double-digits. A 7-0 Baldwin Wallace run trimmed the score to 25-21 at the midway mark, however. Chipping away more, the Jackets grabbed the lead with 1:01 left in the half. BW carried a 28-26 lead into the break.

In this season's previous showdown, a poor third quarter spelled defeat. This time around, John Carroll did not show any fear. The quarter started slow, as BW did not score until the 5:56 mark. Ryncarz then took over with a couple triples, helping keep JCU ahead. But BW finished strong on an 8-0 run in the final 1:06, including a late three. However, JCU was still very much in it, trailing only 50-47.

As the quarter marched ahead, it appeared that Baldwin Wallace might slowly separate from the Streaks. To the visitors' strong credit, JCU did strong work in the paint, including a tough Carly Perusek basket to tie it at 59. But free throws proved to be JCU's undoing, as the Yellow Jackets hit five free throws down the stretch to clinch the win.

Ava Ryncarz topped all scorers with 27 points, 16 more than the second-highest scorer between the two teams. The Aurora native is 2 points away from joining the 1,000 point club at JCU. Ryncarz tabbed 11 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season. Kaylie McKenney enjoyed a solid day with 11 points plus 7 rebounds.

JCU's 9-for-19 day at the charity stripe proved to be part of the difference. JCU shot just 33.3% from the field, though the Blue Streaks did tie the rebounding battle, 40-40.
