Women's Basketball Dominates Muskingum to Earn #3 Seed in OAC Tourney

Ella Neitzel guided a ferocious JCU offensive attack

NEW CONCORD, Ohio – The John Carroll Women's Basketball ended the 2024-25 regular season on a high note on Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Streaks downed the Muskingum Fighting Muskies in dominant fashion, 88-45, to finish with a 19-6 overall mark, 13-5 in Ohio Athletic Conference play.

On Tuesday, #3 seeded John Carroll will host the OAC Tournament Quarterfinal at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center at 7 pm, as #6 seed Otterbein will come to town.

Despite the large margin of victory, Muskingum trailed behind John Carroll just 12-10 through the first five minutes of the contest. This, however, would quickly change, as head coach Beth Andrews' squad fired on a 14-0 run to end the first quarter.

Ryncarz capped off the quarter with two three-pointers in the final minute, giving JCU a controlling 26-10 lead.

The offense did not show any signs of letting up in the second quarter, especially from outside the arc. Sophomore guard Brooke Laub picked up where Ryncarz left off, as she nailed one from deep to give the Blue Streaks a 20-point lead. This would eventually lead to Neitzel scoring back-to-back three pointers, followed by multiple defensive stops by John Carroll.

Neitzel would go on to score 11 points in the second quarter, while the Blue Streaks finished the first half of play with a commanding 51-18 lead over Muskingum.

JCU's impressive offensive performance was paired with an incredible defensive effort on Saturday, as the Blue Streaks dominated in every statistical category.

The Fighting Muskies were held to 27.6% field goal percentage on top of John Carroll out-rebounding their fellow OAC opponent, 42-31. Junior forward Kaylie McKinney played a key role down low after snagging nine rebounds.

All the success from the first half carried into the third quarter for JCU, as the combination of Ryncarz, Neitzel, Laub and sophomore forward Abigail Rosol contributed to the team's growing lead. Even with Muskingum's 27-point half, the Blue Streaks' efficiency on both ends of the court virtually put the game away.

Junior guard Ella Neitzel and senior forward Ava Ryncarz lead the charge on offense for the Blue Streaks, as Neitzel finished with a career-high 21 points while Ryncarz ended with 19 points of her own.
