Strong Second Half Propels John Carroll Past Wilmington

WILMINGTON- The Blue Streaks hit the road for the fifth straight Saturday, this time paying a visit to the Wilmington Quakers. The Blue Streaks struggled at the start but a strong second half effort powered John Carroll to a 81-65 victory.

The Quakers came out ready, making two quick threes to gain an early 7-4 lead. After quickly fighting back, Aidan Fitzgerald's first three of the game lifted the Blue Streaks to their first lead.

A pair of layups by Luke Frazier extended that lead to six, but a trio of threes quickly gave Wilmington their lead back and John Carroll found themselves trailing with seven minutes left in the opening half.

The game stayed that way for a few minutes before the Blue Streaks tied it up on a David Gentry layup. A pair of Frazier free throws would give John Carroll the lead. A three by Chase Toppin and a mid-range pull up by Frazier closed out the half sending the teams to locker rooms with the Blue Streaks ahead 35-28.

John Carroll came out fast as Fitzgerald's second triple of the game extended the lead to nine and a floater just a minute later extended the lead into double-digits, where it would stay for the remainder of the game. Fitzgerald's third three-pointer of the day extended that lead to 17.

John Carroll continued to apply the pressure and grew the lead. A pair of free throws by Will Yontek put the lead at 29, the largest of the game, as both teams would begin to empty their benches.

Wilmington stopped the bleeding and began chipping away at the deficit but it was too little, too late as Omar Abuhamdeh closed out the Blue Streak scoring with a three of his own.

Gentry led the way with a game-high 18 points. Frazier added 14 points while Fitzgerald came in with an additional 13 on 5-9 shooting from the floor.

"Going on the road is always tough against any team in the OAC and it was amazing to watch our squad rally at the end of the first half and for the greater part of the second part," said senior Henry Raynor. "Aidan Fitzgerald was huge for us today, he made some great plays on the defensive end and knocked down huge shots on O. This is a really special team and I am excited to see what we can accomplish through the end of the regular season and into the playoffs."
