Cold and Ice Can't Stop Women's Lacrosse, as JCU Wins 3rd Straight

John Carroll conquered Calvin with a strong second-half showing

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – The strong start continues for John Carroll Women's Lacrosse.

While snow and ice caused a delay to the Blue Streaks' game vs. Calvin, nothing could cool off John Carroll.

In a dominant effort in cold conditions, John Carroll rolled to a 13-4 conquest at Don Shula Stadium to advance to 3-0 on the year.

"It's not easy, as obviously they're cold on the field and we're getting subs in, but the energy on the sidelines is what kept the momentum going, it was huge today," said Head Coach Kelsey Shewbridge. "Our Streak of the Game was someone who just absolutely lit it up, Jo Lawler. That definitely helped for sure."

Olivia Hanulak got the Blue Streaks on the board on the woman-up, with Riley Knapp providing a quick insurance goal early. John Carroll never again trailed.

Samantha Usterbowski helped to fire up the offense next, providing an assist on a Knapp goal then doing the job herself off a Hanulak helper. And so, JCU took a 4-2 lead into the second quarter.

The second stanza was quite offensive-wise. After a Calvin goal just 63 seconds into the period, but it was 12 minutes til either team scored a goal, when Kathleen Cagney fired home a goal of a Lauren Schwartz pass. JCU held a 5-3 lead at the break.

"In the first half, Calvin gave us a good game. They were aggressive and came out hot," said Shewbridge. "We just needed to get the momentum going in the second half. When we came out, we needed to make sure that as soon as we stepped on the field, the game had to be ours on both sides of the ball. And the energy was there."

Indeed, John Carroll scored the only two goals of the third stanza. Kenzie Krom notched a tally early, and Knapp found twine again off an Anna Spitzer assist. JCU's 7-3 advantage felt safe heading into the fourth.

Calvin did score the first goal of the fourth quarter, but John Carroll took no prisoners from there. Hanulak tabbed a goal and Abby Cassidy fired home a free-position goal near the 11-minute mark, leading to a Calvin timeout.

The break didn't affect John Carroll, as the momentum kept rolling. Knapp, Cagney, Krom, and Schwartz all scored down the stretch, putting things out of reach. The Blue Streaks finished off a 13-4 victory by refusing to let the cold affect them down the stretch.

Knapp and Hanulak tied for the team lead with 4 points. Cagney, Hanulak, and Cassidy al registered 4 groundballs. Cassidy also showcased her defensive efforts with 4 caused turnovers. In net, Rachel Kroeger played fantastic, making some bigtime saves in the second half along the way to an 8-save day.

"We're on a strong trajectory forward," said Shewbridge. "Every game is an opportunity to learn and move forward, and we're taking it day by day. We're excited."

Next Up
John Carroll will fly to Florida on Sunday for two games in Clearwater. First, JCU will do battle with Emmanuel College (Mass.) on Tuesday at 9:30 am.
