UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- On a sunny day at Don Shula Stadium, the Blue Streak stay undefeated with a 14-7 win over Oberlin College.

With the victory, John Carroll Women's Lacrosse improves to 6-0 on the season.

As both teams went to the center circle, John Carroll sophomore Riley Knapp won the first draw control and the match was underway. With an early penalty on the Blue Streaks, the momentum went early for Oberlin. Sophie Ward found the back on the net on a free-position, woman-up goal to make it 1-0. John Carroll responded a couple minutes later. On JCU's second shot attempt, grad student Olivia Hanulak found the net for her 13th goal of the season to make the game 1-1.

After a big save by John Carroll goalie Rachel Kroeger on a free-position attempt, the Blue Streaks marched down the field and first-year Kenzie Krom found the back of the net for the first Blue Streak lead of the game.

After a nice goal by Abby Cassidy thanks to the pass by Anna Spitzer, the Blue Streaks started to build momentum. After a goal called off by the officials for Oberlin, Hanulak continued the momentum when she found the net for the second time, making it a 4-1 lead for the Blue Streaks.

The Blue Streaks kept peppering shots, and it seemed each chance found the back of the net. After a goal by Abby Cassidy to make the lead 5-1, Knapp found the back of the net courtesy of a pass from Lauren Schwartz to make it 6-1 before the end of the first quarter.

After both teams exited the huddle to start the second quarter, John Carroll picked off right where they left off. Two minutes into the quarter, Kathleen Cagney joined the goal party thanks to an assist from Spitzer. A minute later, Cassidy completed the hat trick to make it an 8-1 game.

Despite being down, Oberlin was not out. Oberlin was able to score twice on free position attempts and once on even strength to make it an 8-4 ballgame.

With the last four minutes of the second quarter being a defensive battle filled with turnovers and ground balls, the Blue Streaks held a 4-goal lead at halftime. John Carroll outshot Oberlin 18-8 (16-7 on goal) and had five more ground balls (20-15) after the first 30 minutes of action.

As action resumed in the second half, the Blue Streaks continued to build on their lead as Hanulak picked up a hat trick and Krom scored her second to make it a 10-4 game. After a goal by Oberlin, John Carroll tallied a pair of goals thanks to Cassidy and Samantha Usterbowski to make it a 12-5 game after three quarters.

Oberlin started the fourth quarter in the goal sheet. On a woman-up opportunity, Phoebe Dolan found the back of the net to cut the lead to six.

After the goal by Dolan, both teams focused on defense during most of the fourth quarter. With an 8-minute goal drought, Mary Grace Godleski broke the silence with a goal for John Carroll to make it a 13-6 game.

Godleski kept the offensive push for the Blue Streaks as she bounced one into the net on a woman-up, free-position shot. Oberlin responded with a woman-up goal of their own two minutes later, thanks to the stick of Lauren Deardorf.

The next major event in the match was when the clock hit zeros and the Blue Streaks would beat the Yeowomen 14-7.

In the win, the Blue Streaks outshot Oberlin 35-22 (34-14) on goal). Leading the way was Abby Cassidy, who scored 5 goals.

"It feels good to get a win, especially on home turf," Cassidy commented. "It was a strong overall game on offense, defense, and in net. We are definitely happy with the win tonight and are excited for the next one."

Kenzie Krom and Olivia Hanulak each notched 3 points, while Krom added a team-high 6 groundballs and Hanulak tabbed 4 draw controls. Riley Knapp enjoyed a nice day, stuffing the stat sheet with 7 draw controls, 3 groundballs, and 2 caused turnovers.
