Baseball Loses Two to Start Mary Washington Series

The Blue Streaks will look to bounce back on Sunday morning

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – For the fourth straight season, John Carroll Baseball made the trek south to play the University of Mary Washington for a 3-game series.

On the first day of the series, the Blue Streaks dropped both, 3-0 and 5-2.

John Carroll's bats struggled to gain traction against a stout Eagles pitching staff, while errors cost JCU during its comeback attempt in game two.

Game 1
Mary Washington got on the board early, as a pair of singles and walks hurt Frank Freeman. Thankfully, the veteran settled in from there, but the Eagles' 2-run margin would prove to be enough.

John Carroll drew a walk in the second, but could not get a hit or a runner into scoring position into the sixth inning. George Haracz broke the ice with a 2-out double down the right field line, but the Eagles quickly got the third out.

Trailing 3-0, the visitors fired up a 2-out rally in the ninth, bringing the tying run to the plate after a Dylan Sowers double and an Ethan Glossa single. But the Eagles slammed the door on a 3-0 win.

CJ Desmond was a bright spot in the action for JCU. The first-year righty logged two innings of excellent relief to keep the Blue Streaks within striking distance. This marked the second appearance of the season for the Glen Ellyn, Illinois native. Both have been scoreless.

Game 2
Mary Washington built an early lead once again, scoring the game's first run in the bottom of the first frame. Erik Daugenti did threaten to score in the second, singling and then reaching third thanks to two groundouts, but it would be UMW to score next in the third, upping the lead to 2-0.

JCU's bats at last came alive in the fourth. Glossa singled and Connor Mayle doubled to set two in scoring position with no outs. An error opened the door for JCU, and the visitors walked through, tying it up at two.

But then errors harmed the Blue Streaks. Unearned runs in the fifth and seventh allowed the Eagles to scratch across runs. The sixth inning also stung, as JCU loaded the bases with one out only to have UMW escape with a double play. The Eagles scored in the bottom of the frame to add salt to the wound.

Jake Corll gave the Blue Streaks six innings of work, allowing three earned runs while striking out five. Kiayuan Baskerville tabbed three K's in two innings of work.

Next Up
John Carroll Baseball will play Mary Washington one more time on Sunday. The Blue Streaks and Eagles will now play at 10 am, as the start time was pushed up due to expected weather in the afternoon.
