Field of Dreams: Baseball Debuts Schweickert Field Turf with a Dominant Win

Roger Simon pitched a beauty and the bats erupted for 10 runs

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS — New turf, same red-hot John Carroll Blue Streaks.

After an impressive showing in the Sunshine State to kick off the season, JCU's baseball team picked up right where they left off on Tuesday's home opener and debut of the brand-new turfed Schweickert Field. The Blue Streaks blew past Bethany College, 10-0.

Junior pitcher Roger Simon fueled the Blue Streaks with a remarkable outing, as the righty recorded six strikeouts in seven innings of work, while allowing just five hits.

"I felt good. The pitches were moving," said Simon. "I was hitting my spots most of the time, and the defense was making the plays behind me."

Offensively, John Carroll was able to get the bats going early in the contest, which paved the way to their 13 total hits. The Blue Streaks started off the second inning with three consecutive singles from junior Chris Bach and seniors Carson Balfour and Jack Harmon. This was quickly followed by a sacrifice double play by sophomore George Haracz, giving JCU an 1-0 lead.

The offensive moment carried over into the third inning, as graduate student Erik Daugent hammered an RBI triple, scoring senior Sean Connolly. Balfour once again stepped up big for John Carroll, as he pushed Daugenti across off an error.

JCU was able to put the nail in the coffin in the fifth inning, scoring four more runs. Haracz took advantage of a walk with the bases loaded, while senior Michael Persichetti knocked in Bach. Connolly continued the run with a 2-run double, which gave the Blue Streaks a 7-0 lead after five innings.

Both Connolly and Daugenti led the charge on offense on Tuesday, as the veteran duo finished the day with a combined five hits and four RBIs in seven at bats.

The Blue Streaks were able to manufacture three more runs in the the sixth and eighth inning thanks to senior Sean Fritinger's two RBIs off the bench.
