The Bats are Hot: Blue Streaks Erupt for 32 Runs in Road Sweep of Otterbein

Ethan Glossa and the Blue Streaks did impressive work

WESTERVILLE – Nothing like an early-season litmus test to start Ohio Athletic Conference play, right?

John Carroll Baseball more than passed the test. The Blue Streaks aced it with flying colors.

In a historic way, the Blue Streaks swept Otterbein University, 16-8 and 16-6.

For the first time in series history dating back to 1990, JCU scored 16 runs in both games of a doubleheader with the Cardinals. Also fascinating? Otterbein and JCU entered deadlocked at 37-37 in the series history.

This sweep means extra much knowing that Otterbein swept JCU in University Heights last year, and made the OAC Tournament. Yes, a good early barometer.

Along the way today, history was made. Ethan Glossa accumulated 8 runs batted in during the team's second win. A JCU hitter hadn't achieved the feat in some time.

Want to know the last person who scored 8 RBIs in a game? After reading this article, you'll need to scroll all the way down to the end for the answer.

"I just wanted to join the party, I don't think I had one game one when we had 16 runs, so I wanted to join in on the fun in game two," said Glossa. "I got lucky for there to be runners on base for me to hit in.

"Coach Bell has been preaching that our bats are going to get hot," continued Glossa. "[Our bats] were hot today, and you saw what happened when 1-9 hits, everyone putting the ball in play and making plays on a grass field."

You couldn't ask for much better if you're a JCU fan. Two lengthy stints by your starters. Outscoring your opponent 12-0 in the first three innings of the two games. A patient approach at the dish with as many walks as strikeouts.

Game 1
From the get go, John Carroll's bats were ready to rip. The Blue Streaks plated four runs in both the first and second innings for a quick 8-0 lead.

Connor Mayle blasted a 2-run shot to left field for starters, and then Chris Bach did the same shortly after. While leaving the yard is nothing new for Mayle (his bomb was the 14th of his career), Bach savored the moment of his first collegiate roundtripper.

Errors haunted Otterbein in the second, as all four runs were unearned. Erik Daugenti knocked in a pair with a single through the left side and Bach did even more damage with an RBI single to center.

Though in this wacky game, JCU would need more runs. The winning runs followed in the fourth. Doing the honors on a 2-run homer this time was Sean Fritinger for his second of the year and a 10-0 lead.

Frank Freeman largely cruised through the first four innings, JCU's ace ran into trouble in the fifth and sixth, allowing six runs (three earned). But he survived for a scoreless seventh inning, saving JCU's bullpen.

JCU officially put things out of reach with a 4-run eighth. Otterbein's bullpen lost the strike zone, walking four and hitting Bach with a pitch. Sean Connolly and Daugenti added to the fun with a pair of RBI singles. While Otterbein plated two in response in the bottom of the frame, Connolly wrapped things up with a clean ninth inning.

The scorecard was full of impressive notes for JCU's hitters, namely 17 hits and 8 walks. Each member of the starting nine recorded a hit, including 3-hit outings for Connolly, Daugenti, and Bach in the 4-5-6 spots.

Game 2
Game 1 went perfectly, so how about repeating the process?

John Carroll did just that, racing out to a 7-0 lead, getting a long start, and having the bullpen finish the last few frames.

Fittingly, Glossa drove in the first run in the first. Connolly made it two with an RBI double. Daugenti and Fritinger both doubled for runs in the third. A 2-run Glossa double skyrocketed the advantage to 7-0 entering bottom four.

Otterbein mustered a couple runs in the fourth and fifth, but Jake Corll limited the damage. In the meantime, the Cardinal pen fell apart with 5 walks in the seventh. And wouldn't you know it, but Glossa was happy to claim his bases-clearing double.

Errors reared their ugly head for the Cardinals in the ninth, as JCU brought more runs across. Austin Miller closed things out in the final couple innings, as JCU cruised.

The difference was walks. Otterbein's pitchers issued 10 free passes, more than JCU's hit total. Corll and Miller did a nice job of keeping the damage to a minimum. That, and Glossa's 8 RBI day, paved the way for the success.

Next Up
John Carroll Baseball will head home for a quick turnaround, weather permitting. The Blue Streaks are scheduled to face Case Western Reserve University for a doubleheader at Schweickert Field on Sunday starting at noon.

TRIVIA ANSWER:
So, the answer is below. But the deal is this: You've read this far in the article. How about a thank you note or message for Head Athletic Trainer Don McPhillips and the JCU Sports Medicine & Cleveland Clinic Sports Medicine team? It is March, which is National Athletic Trainers Association Month. Now, JCU's athletic trainers don't do it for praise or awards. But we are so thankful for them and their efforts. JCU is blessed to have the best!
