Blue Streaks Split with #23 Case Western Reserve on a Promising Day

A wild ninth inning comeback in game one highlighted a good day at Schweickert Field

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – The ending of Game 1 featured some magic against #23 Case Western Reserve University. The Spartans did not allow for another fun ending in the second game.

John Carroll Baseball settled for a split with the #23 Spartans at Schweickert Field in a Cleveland rivalry showdown on Sunday.

JCU roared back for a win in the opener with a 3-run ninth inning and a 4-3 victory. CWRU added enough insurance runs late for a 4-1 win in the second game.

The victory marked JCU's first over Case Western Reserve since 2018, snapping a 5-game winning streak for the Spartans. Today's trivia question: Who was the Blue Streak who got the win on the mound for JCU on May 5, 2018? The answer is at the end of the article

Game 1
The John Carroll bats were as cold as the weather until the bottom of the ninth when it mattered most.

Facing a 3-0 deficit, John Carroll didn't blink. Chris Bach drew a hit by pitch, and Sean Fritinger quickly got the run home with a double to left field. A Jack Harmon flyout advanced Fritinger to third and then Michael Persichetti scored him with an RBI groundout. With two outs, George Haracz singled. Pinchrunning for Haracz, Michael Pollard got to second on a wild pitch and soon scored on a Connor Mayle double down the right field line.

And then, in a stroke of luck, Ethan Glossa rocketed a flyball to center, and CWRU's centerfielder dropped it. Mayle dashed home, and the Blue Streaks enjoyed an improbable comeback victory.

"With our hitters, I know they can hit in pressure situations. Whoever we put at the plate, we have confidence in," said Manager Bobby Bell. "We want to be sure we put the right guy up at the right time. I tell our hitters that good things happen when you put the ball in play. Today proved that."

The game did not begin so well for JCU. Case Western Reserve got out to a quick start, plating a pair in the first for a 2-0 advantage.

Unfazed, Kiayuan Baskerville bore down from there. The sophomore only surrendered one hit across the next six innings, keeping the door propped for a JCU comeback. The Pittsburgh Central Catholic lasted 7 innings for the Blue Streaks, his longest outing of his collegiate career.

Owen Gerba added a clean eighth inning. CWRU did get a run on him in the ninth, but Sean Connolly limited the damage to a lone run.

"I asked the pitchers to give us a chance, and they did their job well," said Bell.

Besides the aforementioned hero hitters, Jack Harmon also got back on track with a 2-for-4 game. Haracz also finished with a 2-hit game.

Game 2
The Spartans again got out to an early lead in the second game, but this time only by a run. And the Blue Streaks promptly got back to even in the second.

With one out, Fritinger singled to right and got to second on a Harmon single. Persichetti reached on a fielder's choice. During the ensuing at-bat, Persichetti pulled off a very smart baseball play, drawing a pickoff throwdown to second. The veteran intentionally got caught in a rundown, allowing Fritinger to score to tie the game at 1-1.

The Spartans threatened in the fifth, loading the bases with one out. Simon escaped by getting a grounder to Connor Mayle, who stepped on the bag at third and made a strong throw to first for a 5-3 doubleplay.

JCU managed to get a pair of runners in scoring position with two outs in the sixth inning, but the Spartans escaped the inning. Very much a pitcher's duel, the game remained deadlocked at 1-1 entering the seventh with Jay Rinehart taking over for Simon, who pitched very well in 6 innings of work.

Simon's work has been outstanding in his two home appearances, allowing just one run in 13 innings of work, along with 9 strikeouts.

The hosts got two runners aboard with one out in the seventh, though the Spartans got out of the jam. In the next half-inning, the Spartans eked home a run, stealing a 2-1 advantage. CWRU blew it open with a 2-run double in the ninth, extending the lead to three runs as raindrops started to fall. This time, no miraculous comeback was coming.

Next Up
John Carroll Baseball will have some time off this week to prepare for the next opponent on the schedule: Muskingum University. The Fighting Muskies have garnered votes in the D3baseball.com poll this year and will be a stout OAC foe.
