On a Beautiful Day, JCU Softball Breaks in New Turf

The Blue Streaks lost a pair of games to Allegheny in the home opener

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – Slow starts and quiet bats spelled defeat in the home opener today for John Carroll Softball.

Despite the 4-0 and 5-2 losses to Allegheny College, it was still a festive day overall for the Blue Streaks.

It felt like a dream come true to see the Blue Streaks playing on the brand new turf at Bracken Field. The future is indeed bright as the New Era rolls along for the Blue & Gold.

Game 1
The Gators rocketed out to a fast start, aided by JCU errors. Allegheny crossed three unearned runs in the top of the first, crucially taking the early lead.

Danielle Orendi settled in nicely from there, hurling three scoreless innings after the tough first, striking out four in four frames.

Casey Cash also pitched very nicely in relief. The Buckeye grad tossed three near-perfect innings, allowing just one hit.

Unfortunately the bats took a bit to warm up. John Carroll was held hitless through the first six innings. An Abby Farber walk and Alyssa McPeek single with one out in the seventh brought the tying run to the dish, but the Gators ended the threat there.

Game 2
Once again, the Gators burst out to an early lead. Errors harmed the Blue Streaks in the early going again, and Allegheny fired out to a 4-0 advantage.

The Gators' pitching staff continued its dominance for starters. JCU showcased a patient approach at the plate, drawing several walks. McPeek also got JCU in the hit column with a bunt single in the fourth.

In the meantime, the Gators scratched across another run in the fifth frame. But this time, the Blue Streaks authored a great response. Abby Farber and Kendall Trunzo both got aboard with walks, setting the table for Melissa Smith. The veteran blasted a shot down the right field line, scoring both and trimming the deficit to three runs. But Allegheny escaped there without further damage and the win.

Next Up
Weather permitting, John Carroll will play two more games at Bracken Field on Thursday. The Blue Streaks are slated to host Kenyon College for a doubleheader starting at 3 pm.
