Women's Lacrosse Enjoys Exclamation Point Win to Finish Non-Conference Play

The Blue Streaks raced past Illinois Tech to roar into OAC action

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – You couldn't ask for a much better night for the Morgan's Message Game for John Carroll Women's Lacrosse.

With weather in the 60's and sunny for the first half, the Blue Streaks shined a light on mental health before the game.

And on the field, the Blue Streaks shined plenty bright, too. A hot start propelled the hosts to a dominant 24-1 victory, closing out non-conference action with style.

Anna Spitzer started fast, scoring three of the first four goals. Riley Knapp tallied the other one on a nice fadeaway goal. Olivia Hanulak kept up the momentum, firing home a free-position goal to up the lead to 5-0 at the 10:40 mark.

After killing off a couple of green cards, the Blue Streaks upped the lead to six goals. Ellie Fleischer fired a pass from X to Vivian Rung in front of the net, and the Buffalo native fired it home. Illinois Tech took a timeout in response with 7:24 left in the quarter.

The Blue & Gold soon scored on the woman-down after the timeout, as Mary Grace Godleski tallied a fastbreak goal off a nice pass from Karson Martin. Daisy Thompson got in on the fun next, ripping home a topshelf goal.

Rung and Fleischer connected again to up the lead to nine, and then Martin upped the advantage to 10 goals heading into the second quarter.

Fleischer fired home a beauty on the fastbreak to start the scoring in the second quarter, as an Illinois Tech failed clear led to the opportunity. A goal by Vanessa Stevens followed, as did a memorable goal for Maddie Rogers. It was the first collegiate goal for the Walsh Jesuit graduate, as the Stow native hit it home off the ground. Kathleen Cagney finished off the scoring at 14-0 heading into half.

Annalise Caulfield got the scoring rolling at the start of the third with a pair of goals. Rogers provided the assist, the first of her collegiate career. Lauren Schwartz and Allie Quinn (first of the season) found twine before the Scarlet Hawks got on the board for the first time. JCU carried an 18-1 lead heading into the final stanza. JCU finished the job late, highlighted by a nice late goal by Lauren Gorcz.

A total of 17 Blue Streaks scored goals tonight, an impressive feat. Rung and Caulfield contributed 5 points to lead the way, career highs for both Streaks. Spitzer also notched a hat trick, and Fleischer tied her with 3 points. Martin and Caulfield tied for the team lead in ground balls (3) and draw controls (5).
