The Blue Streaks battled difficult conditions in Alliance

ALLIANCE – The spring started off with a conquest for John Carroll Men's Golf.

The Blue Streaks took home the crown at the Mount Union Spring Invitational at Tannehauf Golf Club in Alliance.

John Carroll finished with a final line of 303-292-595, beating Malone University by five strokes. The feat is all the more impressive considering the conditions. Saturday featured a brutal 29⁰ windchill with occasional sleet and wind gusts over 20 mph, some of the worst conditions possible for golf.

Michael Keefe guided the team with a field-low score of 70 on the opening day. "Tough conditions, and we battled through," Keefe said. His effort helped JCU stand in second place with a 303 and trail Malone by five strokes.

Sunday's shotgun was delayed to 11 am due to frost. Tannehauf's thermometer read at a balmy 38⁰ at the start.

London Hoyser matched Keefe's low for the weekend with a 70 on Sunday. His leadership helped to steer JCU to a massive rally and a total of 292. In doing so, JCU overtook Malone and clinched the crown. "We got the job done in tough conditions for a great team win," said Hoyser, who shot a 147 for the weekend to tie for second.

Michael Keefe roared for an especially strong start with an impressive opening round. The Milford, Massachusetts native notched a two-under-par effort with a tally of 70. He concluded the weekend with a 151, good for a seventh-place tie.

Kamden Mowry enjoyed a nice weekend, joining Keefe in seventh. The Ashland native began with a 76 and ended with a 75 and a slight improvement.

Austin Malley    snagged a score of 80 on Saturday before roaring for a much better effort on Sunday. The Peters Township grad carded a 72.  Daniel Donahue started off with a higher score than typical for the star with an 80, but he rebounded almost as nicely with a 75 on Day 2.

John Carroll's "B" team also performed solidly during the opening weekend with a sixth-place finish of 318-316-634.

Carson Meyer kicked off the weekend with an 80 and then fired up a tally of 75, just outside the top 10 individually.

Parker Barrett opened with a 79 on Day 1 and then did almost as well on Day 2 at 80. Justy VonLehmden jotted down an 81 on his scorecard on Saturday and then a 79 on Sunday.

Paul Litrenta carded an 80 for starters and then an 82 to close it out. Max Devins started off with a 79 on Saturday and then the first year tabbed an 85 to round things out.
