Men's Lacrosse Falls at #4 Christopher Newport

The Captains fired out to an early advantage and never looked back

NEWPORT NEWS – A lengthy spring break roadtrip to face #4 Christopher Newport University offered a tall test for John Carroll Men's Lacrosse.

Unfortunately the challenge was too much for the Blue Streaks, as the Captains (6-0) routed the visitors from University Heights, 21-4.

The match featured an atypical 11 am start time, as the game was moved forward from its original 1 pm start due to expected afternoon storms in southern Virginia.

Christopher Newport, coming off a 2024 NCAA Quarterfinals appearance, fired home the first goal just under the 12-minute mark of the first quarter, and fired one home shortly after the restart for a 2-0 advantage. A turnover led to a transition goal near the midpoint of the first quarter for the hosts, leading to a JCU timeout.

Even after the break, the CNU momentum continued. The Captains potted two more goals, heading into the second quarter with a 6-0 lead. CNU continued the offensive onslaught into the second, aided by a significant advantage on faceoffs. Josh Lombardo got the visitors on the board with 2:20 left in the half, taking the ball from X and roaring around the cage to find the opposite corner on a nice shot. Still, the hosts headed into halftime with a 9-1 lead.

JCU did come out of the half strong, as Larry Voss found Sean Keane on a skip pass, who buried a high close shot for a goal. But CNU authored a response with three goals. Braden Zarek staunched the bleeding, but CNU scored three more tallies to set the score at 15-3 after three.

Sean Hogan finished off the scoring for John Carroll with a goal with 2:32 remaining.

Ivan Roeder led the defense with 3 caused turnovers. Jason Xiao, Aidan Dugan, and Nicholas Yemma all tallied 2 CTs. Devin Holder finished with 14 saves, a new game-high for the first-year from Saint Ignatius.

John Carroll will be back in action on Saturday, as the Blue Streaks will head to Ohio Wesleyan for a 12 pm matchup with a future NCAC foe.
