Blue Streaks Split with Albion in a Fascinating Day of Baseball

Jake Corll (pictured) threw a 1-hit gem, and Frank Freeman also tossed a complete game

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Friday was a fascinating day of baseball.

How often do you see a pair of 1-hit gems in a doubleheader, one by each team?

Back in action on Friday at the RussMatt Invitational, the John Carroll Blue Streaks took on the Albion Britons in a two-game set. In Game 1, John Carroll Baseball narrowly avoided a no-hitter in a 1-0 defeat to the Britons. In Game 2, Jake Corll spun a 1-hit gem, and the Blue Streaks' bats awoke in a 9-0 victory.

John Carroll sports a 6-2 record on the season with two more games left in the Florida trip.

Game 1
After tallying 23 runs on 23 hits in Thursday's contest against the St. Thomas Bearcats, the Blue Streaks were unable to keep the momentum head into game one of Friday's doubleheader, losing 1-0.

John Carroll managed to collect just one hit in their first matchup against Albion thanks to a one-out single from newcomer Ethan Glossa in the seventh inning. Unfortunately for JCU's offense, starting pitcher Cole Giesige was able to get out of the jam by retiring the Blue Streak next two hitters.

Despite the lack of offensive production in the first game, junior starting pitcher Frank Freeman dominated in his second start of the season. Freeman went the distance, pitching in all seven innings while giving up only one run on four hits. He also added six strikeouts to the stat sheet, bringing his total up to 15 in 11.1 innings of work.

Game 2
The tides quickly changed in game two for John Carroll, as the offense regained its explosiveness and to earn the victory, 9-0.

While the bats finished with nine hits, it was an impressive outing from junior pitcher Jake Corll that helped the Blue Streaks split the series against Albion. The Austintown, Ohio native had an efficient complete-game shutout, giving up one hit and zero walks in seven innings. His performance on Friday was his first-ever complete game shutout of his collegiate career. The budding star is now 1-1 with a 1.59 ERA in 2025.

JCU took advantage of a couple errors by the Britons, as both Michael Persichetti and Connor Mayle reached on multiple errors. A passed ball plus a Glossa single would give the Blue Streaks a 2-0 lead after in the first inning.

The offense ramped it up in the second inning when Persichetti knocked in sophomore George Haracz. And just like clockwork, Glossa increased John Carroll's lead to five after a huge 2-run double that scored both Persichetti and Mayle.

Throughout the final three innings of the game, the Blue Streaks tallied four more runs. Senior Sean Connolly contributed to two of the runs after a sacrifice fly in the fifth and a sacrifice groundout in the seventh. In addition to Connolly's 2-RBI day, junior Jordan Suvak joined the hitting spree with his first collegiate home run in the sixth, while junior Chris Bach had an RBI double in the last inning.

Glossa continued his incredible hitting stretch down in Auburndale by going 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs in the second match. The transfer from Herkimer Community College is now batting .423 with 14 RBIs and 7 walks to start the season.

"We came out with some juice and got ahead early," said Corll. "That's always a big deal. Get ahead early, throw some strikes, and play Streaks ball. The guys behind me get me going, and they backed me up the whole game. We had some guys who made great plays. We dropped one, and it happens, but we'll be back and be ready to do it again."

Next Up
Saturday marks the final day for the Blue Streaks in the Sunshine State, as they will take on the Calvin Knights in a doubleheader at 2:30 and 5:30.
