In Close Games, Softball Swept by Ohio Northern

The Blue Streaks fought hard but fell short at home

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – An action-packed week for John Carroll Softball continued on Saturday.

On a cold but dry spring day, the Blue Streaks hosted Ohio Northern University at Bracken Field.

While both games were close, John Carroll was swept by Ohio Northern, 3-0 and 5-4.

Game 1
Without a doubt, the opening game was a pitcher's duel. The teams traded scoreless innings through four, with the game rolling by rapidly. Danielle Orendi pitched quite well for John Carroll.

Ohio Northern broke through at last with a pair of runs in the fifth, and added one more in the seventh on a solo homerun.

JCU got a runner in scoring position in the second with back-to-back singles by Alyssa McPeek and Elaina Rodriguez, but nothing more came of it. Isa Crespo doubled in the seventh, but was stranded.

Orendi accepted the tough luck loss despite the strong outing, scattering six hits.

Game 2
John Carroll quickly moved in front in the second contest. Kendall Trunzo opened the first with a single and Melissa Smith walked. RBI singles by Kaylyn Odelli and Isa Crespo provided a nice early lead for Kristin Dems.

The Polar Bears provided a quick response, evening things out at 2-2 in the top of the second. But JCU made magic happen in the third.

Odelli started the action with a single to center field with one out. Izzy Coode rocketed a beautiful homer over the wall in right field, marking her first collegiate home run. It was a fantastic sight to see, as the Mentor native got all of it.

Dems cruised until the sixth inning, running into trouble with back-to-back-to-back doubles. Emily Graves checked into the game and allowed a couple of hits, but overall limited the damage. However, the Polar Bears still managed to sneak ahead, 5-4.

While Smith singled in the seventh and did get into scoring position with 2 outs, the magic ran out.

Odelli and Trunzo both finished with 2-hit outings.

Next Up
John Carroll's busy weekend concludes on Sunday, as JCU heads to Capital University. The Blue Streaks will face the Comets for a 1 and 3 pm doubleheader.
