Late Inning Bursts the Story of Baseball's Split at ONU

Chris Bach enjoyed a heck of an outing in Game 2

ADA – Huge. You wouldn't normally use that word to describe a split. But for today, it's the perfect word.

John Carroll Baseball faced a stout challenge with a roadtrip to Ada on Saturday, facing off with Ohio Northern University, previously unbeaten in Ohio Athletic Conference play.

After a late blowup in the first game, the Blue Streaks repaid the Polar Bears by scoring six in the final two innings to grab a win. Splitting with ONU is critical for positioning in the OAC standings with just six league games left.

Game 1
Ohio Northern got two runs in the bottom of the first off Jake Corll, but then JCU's starter settled in. John Carroll's bats took a bit to heat up, but got going with a 4-run fourth inning.

A pair of 2-run singles by Michael Persichetti and George Haracz did the trick for JCU to snag the lead, albeit briefly. ONU snuck ahead again in the fourth with a 3-run response.

An Erik Daugenti solo shot in the fifth and a Ryan Funderburg RBI single in the sixth snagged the advantage for JCU. But the Polar Bears did not remain quiet for long, chasing Corll from the game in the seventh. While ONU managed to even the game at six, Owen Gerba put out the fire to keep things level.

But then a 5-run ONU eighth inning wiped out JCU's hopes of stealing the opening game, though all five tallies were unearned.

Game 2
Chris Bach was the undeniable story of the second game. The Brecksville native enjoyed the game of his life, with a 5-for-5 outing, accumulating 4 RBIs.

The Brecksville-Broadview Heights grad sparked all of the offense in the early going, with RBI singles in the second, fourth, and sixth innings.

Kiayuan Baskerville contributed four and a third solid innings, departing the game in the fifth. Fireman Owen Gerba extinguished things, stranding a runner. The senior did put a couple aboard in the sixth, though Noah Trojanowski entered and limited the damage to a 5-4 ONU lead.

John Carroll broke through in the eighth. Jack Harmon got aboard with a leadoff single, and soon scored on an RBI triple by, you guessed it, Chris Bach. An ONU error allowed Bach to score as the eventual winning run. For good measure, Ethan Glossa blasted a 2-run, 2-out homer.

To give Sean Connolly more breathing room in the ninth, Funderburg knocked in a run with a single and Persichetti brought in one more with a sacrifice fly. But while Connolly allowed a leadoff single, he didn't need it, cruising for the win in a strong 3-inning effort.

Beyond Bach's heroic outing, Daugenti tallied three hits. As a team, the Blue Streaks' bats were incredible, accumulating 19 hits.
