Baseball Makes a Statement, Sweeping Etta Express for First Time in Program History

The Blue Streaks won on a walkoff in Game 1 and then in dominant fashion in Game 2

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – John Carroll and Marietta have plenty of history in baseball. But in all the years of the storied rivalry, today marked a first.

For the first time in the 40-year history of the series, John Carroll swept Marietta in a doubleheader. Today marked the 37th doubleheader between the two programs, and the final as Ohio Athletic Conference rivals.

On a fantastic spring day at Schweickert Field, John Carroll earned a walkoff 10-inning win in Game 1, 8-7, and blasted the Pios in Game 2, 9-4. Critically, the Blue Streaks now are in prime position for the OAC Tournament with four league games to go.

"We look at Marietta as a standard, they've won national championships and are a powerhouse program in Division III baseball. So you know it's going to be tough when you play them," said Manager Bobby Bell. "To get two wins against them, especially when we needed two coming down the stretch, I'm going to sleep easy tonight."

Game 1
The Pioneers powered to a strong start, blasting a 2-run bomb in the top of the first to grab an early lead. A 30-minute lightning delay didn't stop the Marietta momentum, as the Pioneers padded the lead with a pair of runs to up the advantage to 4-0 after two.

Things got worse in the fifth, as the Pios scored another run and loaded the bases to chase Jake Corll. In his usual fireman role, Gerba checked in. The Saint Ignatius did walk one run in, but got out of the jam with a pair of strikeouts. A solo shot by Jordan Suvak then got JCU on the board in a 6-1 ballgame.

While Gerba cruised through the sixth and seventh, JCU started to chip away, as Ethan Glossa doubled home a run. While Marietta did get the run back in the eighth, the game completely changed in the home half of the inning.

Atypical errors by Marietta provided extra opportunities, and JCU took advantage. Most importantly, Ethan Glossa hit an absolute bomb off the trees deep beyond the right field wall to trim the deficit to just one run.

In the ninth, Connor Mayle double, a Marietta error, and a Suvak hit by pitch loaded the bases. Michael Persichetti drew a hit by pitch to tie up the ball game. While JCU looked in prime position to win the game, Marietta escaped the jam with a 4-3 doubleplay.

Sean Connolly kept the Pioneers off the board in the top of the 10th, and the Blue Streaks enjoyed the second chance. Dylan Sowers singled to right and advanced to second on a Glossa walk. Playing in his 159th game, Erik Daugenti showcased his veteran clutch gene, singling to right to score Sowers and bring the Blue Streaks onto the field for a fun celebration of a dramatic 7-6 win.

"It felt great. We know that sooner or later, when we're firing on all cylinders, we'll be a dangerous team. So it was good to see our guys battle through," said Bell. "We ask them to be tough, and they were tough between the ears today in the first, and then got the momentum going."

Game 2
John Carroll made a statement in the second inning against Marietta's star fifth-year starter Jacob Rocky, hanging up a 7-spot on the scoreboard.

Back-to-back doubles down the line by Erik Daugenti and Connor Mayle started the fun. A Jack Harmon single then scored Mayle, bringing Suvak to the dish. The Murrysville, Pennsylvania native absolutely blasted an oppo taco 3-run homer. Singles by Persichetti and George Haracz kept the Blue Streaks buzzing and forced Marietta manager Brian Brewer to go to the bullpen.

The move didn't matter. A Marietta error extended the inning, and then Daugenti, tying the program record with 160 games played, clubbed a sacrifice fly to finalize the frame at 7-0.

As Kiayuan Baskerville rolled, JCU added a couple more runs to the scoreboard in the fourth. A 1-out Sowers triple to right center started it, with Glossa scoring him with a single, adding to his OAC-best RBI total, up to 44. Another Marietta error allowed a run to score, making it 9-0.

Marietta did not go away quietly, chasing Baskerville in the fifth and clubbing a 2-run homer off the bullpen with a driving wind blowing out of the park. The Pios sure felt in the game, trailing 9-4, especially after JCU's massive Game 1 comeback.

But then Frank Freeman checked into the game to start the sixth. Returning from an injury, the junior from Chicago mowed down his first three hitters, the latter two by strikeout. In both the seventh and the eighth, the Saint Ignatius product allowed a baserunner. But each time, his fielders backed him up with double plays. Freeman would get the win with a fantastic 3-inning outing.

Roger Simon finished things off in the ninth. Marietta opened the inning with a single, but again, a 6-4-3 doubleplay killed any chances of a comeback.

A key aspect of the day was errors. Marietta committed 7 errors across the two games. As for JCU? None.

Ethan Glossa finished the day with 4 hits and 6 RBIs. Jordan Suvak blasted two homers and 4 RBIs. Connor Mayle tabbed a pair of hits in both games.

Also deserving of a great amount of kudos? The bullpen. JCU's bullpen arms allowed just 2 runs in 10 ⅓ innings of work.

"We ask our guys to break down the season into quarters. With that sweep, we won the third quarter with a 6-4 record," said Bell. "On Tuesday, we start the fourth quarter, with however games many we get in here. We hope to kick off that final quarter of the season with a win."
