Men's Lacrosse Powers Past Otterbein at Home

The Blue Streaks handed the Cardinals their first conference loss of the year

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – On a night that turned into a wonderful backdrop for lacrosse, John Carroll steamrolled another conference opponent.

In another Ohio Athletic Conference victory, JCU Men's Lacrosse rolled past Otterbein University on Wednesday night at Don Shula Stadium.

JCU picked up its fourth straight triumph, beating Otterbein, 23-7.

Soon after an early Otterbein penalty, Larry Voss fed a perfect pass to Sean Keane on a nicely drawn up play. Keane finished for the first goal of the game. Not long after, Josh Lombardo fired one home. The train kept rolling, as on another smart play, Richard Moran rocketed home a pass from Seamus Nicholson. Feeling the heat, Otterbein took a timeout as the lead stretched to three with 9:37 on the clock.

The break didn't help the Cardinals, as Josh Wade continued to turn away promising Otterbein chances. Billy Paladino found twine just a minute after the break, and then Keane got a transition goal off a quick Jared Connell pass. The Cardinals didn't quit, notching a pair of goals, though Brody Forrest took the edge off with a longpole goal. The junior took a pass from the slot, provided by William Dunn. JCU held a 6-2 lead at the end of the first.

JCU's quickness in transition continued into the second period, as quickly off a faceoff win, Casey LaForce fired home a feed from Nicholas Yemma. On the next play, LaForce found Jared Connell for the Massachusetts man's first goal of the year. JCU kept the offense going, as Dunn dotted a goal top left on the man-up. Voss helped both that goal and the next by Billy Paladino.

While Otterbein did score a couple goals, JCU's lead felt very safe at 12-4 at the break. Billy Paladino got the scoring going in the third, but it was a quiet period overall, as Brock Schwartz fired home the only other tally on the man-up late in the third. JCU's 14-6 lead was plenty secure entering the fourth.

The lead reached double digits early in the fourth, as Larry Voss tallied two to open the stanza. An Otterbein penalty provided another man-up chance for the Blue Streaks, which Keane cashed in down low off a Lombardo feed, and he kept pouring it on as the game marched to its conclusion.

Sean Keane finished as the leading goal scorer with 7 tallies, adding an assist. Larry Voss enjoyed an outstanding day with a career-best 5 assists. Josh Lombardo notched 5 points. Hayden Mumbach, Camden Uchic, and Aidan Dugan all grabbed 2 caused turnovers. Nicholas Yemma tabbed 8 groundballs, followed by Sean Hogan with five.

Josh Wade got the start in cage and made 9 saves in the first half. Devin Holder occupied the net in the second half and accumulated 12 saves.
