Men's Lacrosse Drops Regular Season Finale

The Blue Streaks couldn't score down the stretch to beat Mount Union

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – The stretch run has not been kind to John Carroll Men's Lacrosse.

In a down-to-the-wire battle, the Blue Streaks lost a tough one to Mount Union, 12-11, on a beautiful evening at Don Shula Stadium.

A lucky late goal by the Purple Raiders got the game-winner, marking a third loss in four conference games for the Blue Streaks. However, despite this, JCU still looks be the third seed in the upcoming Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament based on the three-team tiebreaker between JCU, Mount Union, and Otterbein (all teams went 1-1 vs. each other, but JCU wins the point differential between the three at +5).

Looking at the OAC tiebreakers, JCU appears to be in line to host the OAC Quarterfinal on Saturday at Shula Stadium at 1 pm.

Casey LaForce started the scoring with a wicked side shot that found twine three minutes into the contest. The next goal came seven minutes later, as Josh Lombardo fired home a fun goal. But the Purple Raiders scored a pair of goals in quick succession with just under four minutes to play, evening things up at two apiece heading into the second.

Mount Union kept winning faceoffs and scored on its first possession of the period to take its first lead of the day. JCU responded with a solid goal, as Braden Zarek fired a pass from X to Sean Hogan, who sent home a nice shot. The teams then traded goals, with Billy Paladino doing the honors on a bounce shot.

Quickly after Mount Union snagged a 5-4 lead with 3:20 left in the second, John Carroll called a timeout. Immediately following the faceoff, Nicholas Yemma got a quick pass to Richard Moran, who took advantage of the opportunity. With just 3 seconds left in the first half, Zarek roared for a huge goal on a bouncer, setting JCU ahead at half, 6-5.

Just 74 seconds into the third, JCU kept the momentum going with a goal. Taking a LaForce pass, Paladino charged forward and rocketed hom a goal low left. The teams took turns scoring, with Sean Keane finding space low in the crease and sending home a Moran pass. Following a five-minute break in the scoring, Lombardo ripped a goal off a centering pass from Zarek at X. But a Mount Union goal with 19 seconds left in the third trimmed JCU's lead to 9-8 entering the fourth.

Mount Union got a couple defensive stops to begin the fourth quarter, and took advantage with a pair of goals to sneak ahead. But JCU authored a quick response, as Billy Paladino fired home a low goal with traffic in front. LaForce then pushed JCU ahead, 11-10.

With 5:13 to play, Mount Union tied it up. A few minutes later, the Purple Raiders took the lead on a pass that bounced off a stick and into the net on a fortunate bounce. Despite a few late JCU opportunities, Mount Union remained in the lead the rest of the way, even with a late man-up for JCU.

LaForce topped the scoring column for JCU with 4 points. Mount Union won the faceoff battle, taking 15-of-26 in an important advantage. Camden Uchic enjoyed a good day on defense with 2 caused turnovers and 4 groundballs. Devin Holder made 15 saves in a solid effort.
