Bats Quiet in a Sweep in Alliance

The Blue Streaks lost two games to Mount Union

ALLIANCE – John Carroll Softball ran into a buzzsaw on Wednesday, dropping two games at Mount Union, a perennial title contender in the Ohio Athletic Conference.

The Blue Streaks were held scoreless for the first 12 innings of the 14-inning doubleheader, and while the pitching overall performance was solid, it was not enough. It was a continuation of the theme, as JCU ranks tops in the conference in strikeouts and third in ERA, but last in batting average and runs.

JCU lost in Alliance, 4-0 and 7-3, despite the noble effort.

Game 1
The hosts got on the board first, plating a run in the third inning. John Carroll looked in position to respond in the next half-inning, as Melissa Smith doubled to left center to start the fourth. But while Mount Union did allow another runner to get aboard via an error, the Raiders got three straight outs to escape.

Mount Union chased Danielle Orendi after four innings with a pair of runs, one unearned. Casey Cash worked two innings, allowing an unearned run in the sixth, but was solid overall.

But the bats remained silent the rest of the way, finishing with just one hit for the game.

Game 2
Kristin Dems got the start on the circle and started well in the first two innings before running into trouble in the third, allowing two runs.

Kendall Trunzo and Izzy Coode both nabbed singles in the early going. But JCU did not get a runner into scoring position until the sixth. And by then, Mount Union had managed to extend the lead to 7-0.

Still, JCU didn't quit. Trunzo singled up the middle to begin the sixth, and quickly scored on an RBI double to center by Alyssa McPeek. Later in the inning, Coode brought home McPeek on an RBI single. JCU did manage to load the bases with 2 outs, but Mount Union escaped with a strikeout.

Lydia Pratt singled and then scored on a Smith single, but JCU's comeback petered out there.

Emily Graves was a bright spot in the circle, pitching an inning and two thirds of scoreless, hitless relief.

Next Up
John Carroll has four games left in the season, all at home. The next series is on Saturday, as JCU will welcome Wilmington to Bracken Field for Senior Day.
