Orendi's Arm and Hot Bats Deliver Home Victory over Otterbein

JCU played excellently in Game 1 before Mother Nature canceled Game 2

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – Rain and snow ended the day prematurely, but John Carroll Softball's outlook is sunny after today's action.

The Blue Streaks have now won three straight at Bracken Field, the best such run at home for JCU since 2019. And importantly, JCU picked up its first Ohio Athletic Conference win of the year.

JCU earned a strong 5-1 victory over Otterbein in Game 1 on Monday afternoon before the second game was rained out.

Danielle Orendi cruised in the first three frames, and the bats provided some support in the bottom of the third.

Emily Graves rocketed a double to start the frame, and quickly dashed home on a Kendall Trunzo single. The fun continued on a deep blast to left center by Alyssa McPeek, as the rookie legged out an RBI triple. The Eastlake North grad soon scored on an Elizabeth Hohlefelder sacrifice fly to right field.

JCU added to the lead in the fourth. Kaylyn Odelli started off the inning with a well-struck double. After a pitching change, Elaina Rodriguez found green and tore around the basepaths for an RBI triple. The junior dashed home on a Trunzo Texas Leaguer single up the middle.

Otterbein finally got a hit in the fifth, homering to trim the deficit to 5-1. But the Cardinals generated nothing much else at the dish the rest of the way, marking Orendi's second dominant complete game win in as many days. The star struck out 10, making it 21 K's in 2 days.

Also worthy of note was Elaina Rodriguez's play at the hot corner. The Avon native made a couple of quick plays at third base in an overall outstanding day.

Also, a very special shoutout goes to Kelsey Bernhard! Today starts Graduate Student Appreciation Week, and JCU Softball's star Graduate Assistant has done a fantastic job for the program. The Blue Streaks are very grateful for her excellent work.

Next Up
