Late First-Half Goal and Second-Half Red Card Spell Defeat in Men's Soccer Opener

The Blue Streaks looked good at times but couldn't overcome a pair of setbacks

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – The 2025 campaign commenced on Friday evening at Don Shula Stadium on a beautiful night for soccer.

In front of a strong crowd for Shaker Youth Soccer Night, the Blue Streaks confronted Edgewood University for the first time in program history.

John Carroll Men's Soccer could not gain traction offensively due to playing much of the second half man-down, and surrendered a late first-half tally in a 1-0 home loss.

The first portion of the opening half looked very much like the first contest of the year, marked by tentative action without much in the way of offense.

Dylan Halm provided the first breathtaking opportunity for JCU in the 13th minute, rocketing a fiery shot on net, but Edgewood's keeper made a leaping save to turn it away from danger.

Edgewood sent ahead a pair of potentially troubling throughballs, but JCU's backline stood firm, with defenders such as Garlen Woest playing well to counter crosses. Brenden Moher also stepped in on a few occasions before things got hairy. The most promising opportunity occurred in the 17th minute, with a deep, sailing shot drifting high and wide.

With fresh troops, Dejan Mladenovic kept his starting 11 in the match until making his first subs in the 33rd minute, as Harley Forkins, Patrick Bohan, and Dante Rajaie checked into the match. Nick Mikulec subbed in shortly after.

In the 36th minute, Moher made his first true save on a weakly struck shot. In the 44th minute, Edgewood found firm contact. A sneaky fast throw-in led to a strong pass from Liam Moreira to the foot of Gabe Voung, who launched home the season's first tally.

The Blue Streaks headed into the half trailing by a goal. The teams came out of the half trading yellow cards, Dylan Halm receiving JCU's booking.

Edgewood started to enjoy the better of the possession contest, catching JCU unawares on a couple of occasions, including in the 60th minute on a dangerous Eagles shot that went wide.

The game took a significant turn in the 64th minute, with Noah Schmidt sent off on a red card for "Violent Behavior II", assessed after the sophomore tapped an Eagle after a challenge near the end line.

And so, the Blue Streaks were forced to play a man down for the rest of the match. With 10 men on the pitch, John Carroll could not be as direct and aggressive, especially harmful against a stellar Edgewood backline.

JCU finally got a promising counterattack with Harley Forkins pushing forward and forcing a corner, though the ensuing kick went nowhere. Halm left-footed a quick attack wide left.

John Carroll kept on pressing in the late goings of the match, but being a man down was too much to overcome in the end.

The visiting Eagles finished with an 8-3 advantage in shots, 4-1 in shots on goal.
