After 5-Set Loss to SJF and Sweep of UR, JCU Returns Home with 1-2 Record

The Blue Streaks sport some positives from a weekend in Ithaca

ITHACA, N.Y. – The first tournament of the season offered ups and downs for the Blue Streaks.

Through the good and the bad, John Carroll Volleyball will return home from the 2025 Bomber Volleyball Invitational with a 1-2 mark.

In Saturday's first match, JCU experienced a grueling 5-set loss to St. John Fisher with scores of 25-14, 14-25, 16-25, 25-23, 14-16. In the tournament finale, JCU fired past the University of Rochester, 25-16, 28-26, 26-24.

JCU vs. SJF
The first set of the day went quite smoothly for John Carroll. Back-to-back-to-back kills by Hailey Williams keyed a dominant start, as JCU cruised to a 16-5 lead. The Cardinals didn't quit, but JCU won with ease.

Following a hot start by Mary Kate Sheehan in the second set, JCU's offense cooled. The Cardinals found their way midway through the set, with a 9-point run doing the damage. St. John Fisher's run occurred earlier in the third set, with a 12-5 start. JCU never got within striking distance.

The Blue Streaks evened things up with a narrow fourth set conquest. JCU trailed 14-11 before evening things up. SJF errors contributed to the Blue Streaks' return, though Glowe provided some key kills en route. JCU showcased grit to get to the fifth set

JCU's serve/receive game contributed to its downfall in the fifth set. The Blue Streaks committed a pair of service errors and allowed two service aces, taking away a chance to defeat an SJF team that JCU swept in 2023. However, JCU went down swinging, showing confidence.

Glowe topped the team with 12 kills, followed closely by Sheehan with 11. Tess Humphrey (16) and Haley Nicholson (14) split the assists like usual. Olivia Mogyordy topped the team with 13 digs.

JCU vs. UR
John Carroll put up much better offensive numbers against Rochester from the get-go. JCU's whole front line got in on the fun in the opening set, with five different Blue Streaks authoring kills. While Rochester kept it close early, a 10-2 JCU run put it out of reach.

Rochester roared out of the gate in the second set with a 7-0 advantage, but it was instantly negated by a 7-point JCU run. The Clevelanders fired ahead 12-8, but again, a pair of service aces disrupted JCU's rhythm, stopping momentum. The Yellowjackets thus hung around before finally tying it at 22-all. Following back-and-forth action, JCU stole the set with three consecutive kills, two by Sheehan.

The Blue Streaks constructed a nice 15-7 lead in the third, keyed by a Glowe service run, before errors caught up with JCU. Rochester sliced the lead to 17-15 before JCU fired up a 4-1 mini-run. However, the Yellowjackets battled back into it to steal a 24-23 lead. A UR error stopped the momentum, and then an Amanda Scaperotta ace plus a Sheehan kill finished off the day.

Sheehan and Glowe tied for the team lead with 13 kills. Humphrey got more of the work at setter with 24 assists, though Nicholson showed poise under pressure when called upon. Mogyordy tabbed 14 digs, while Brooke Conlan looked good with 4 blocks. Deja Whitten showed versatility playing in multiple spots. It was a nice taste of revenge after JCU was swept last year by Rochester.

"This was a solid weekend for our team," said Head Coach Michele Benoit. "In particular, the team showed lots of character in forcing a fifth set against St. John Fisher after losing sets two and three. It was so close. Against Rochester, it was great to get the win to close out the weekend. We have plenty of positives to build upon."

The Blue Streaks will travel to Allegheny College on Wednesday for a mid-week non-conference matchup.
