Women's Golf Makes a Statement, Winning ONU Kick Off with Gulla's Historic Round

| By:

The Blue Streaks enjoyed a truly historic day in the first action of the 2025-26 campaign

HARROD, Ohio – A message was sent today. John Carroll Women's Golf has arrived.

With a fresh influx of talent, the Blue Streaks showed out in the first weekend of the fall campaign. The following is not hyperbole: Today marked one of the best days in John Carroll Women's Golf history.

John Carroll captured first place at Ohio Northern's Kick Off Classic with a team score of 331. Julia Gulla stood first amongst all golfers with a round of 74 (+2), setting a program record in the process. Tomorrow will determine the medalist, as ONU will host the Joe Campoli Memorial also at Colonial Golf Club, technically a separate tournament but connected as far as medalist honors go.

Full Results

Here is some perspective for historical purposes:
  • Digital records for JCU Women's Golf date back to 2007. Today's round of 331 is the best round during that span
  • In her first day golfing for JCU, Julia Gulla set a program record for a round by two strokes
  • The previous record was 76, set by Jackie Leuby on September 27, 2010
  • JCU Women's Golf has been in existence since 1999
So yes, you could call today remarkable for JCU Women's Golf.

With a total of nine first years on the roster heading into the season, Head Coach Missy Gedeon knew the Blue Streaks would be improved. But the fourth-year head coach is certainly quite pleased with the results, for good reason.

Julia Gulla instantly stole the show for the Blue Streaks with a 74. The Nordonia grad started out around four-above-par before hitting a couple birdies. As Gedeon notes, Gulla strikes "bullets" off the tee and "doesn't miss errantly." Without a doubt, Gulla will be a must-watch golfer not only tomorrow but the rest of the season for Blue Streak fans.

Emily Burling and Kyah Huckelberry also enjoyed quite the debuts. The Hudson and Ashland natives carded identical scores of 84 for the day, tying for eighth in the field for +12.

Lauren Roof, the only returner on the "Blue" team, provided the final score with a mark of 89. Madison Maxwell rounded out the "Blie" squad with a tally of 94.

Meanwhile on the JCU "Gold" team, Alexandra Yeager led the way with a score of 91. Meredith Thompson followed closely behind with a mark of 92. Hannah Prince carded a 95 for the day. Irena Steffas rounded out the team score with a 100. JCU Gold nabbed a 378.

"That's pretty good for a bunch of freshmen on their first nervous try," said Gedeon. "Julia went four over par early in her round, but she calmed down, made two birdies, and finished beautifully. The course is a little tricky, too, with a lot of weird greens and a creek that keeps coming into play. So, it takes some navigating. I'm very proud of our team."

The Blue Streaks hope to enjoy a similarly exciting day tomorrow at ONU's Joe Campoli Memorial.
