#20/21 Blue Streaks Stall in Baltimore at #3 Johns Hopkins

The Blue Streak offense couldn't score in the second half after the defense rebounded

BALTIMORE, Md. – Without a doubt, #20/21 John Carroll Football battled #3 Johns Hopkins fiercely.

But the Blue Jays' early 21-3 lead proved to be too much to overcome, as JCU struggled to run the ball and couldn't put points on the board in the second half.

JCU drops to 1-1 on the season with the 27-13 loss at Homewood Field in Baltimore in the first all-time matchup between the programs.

The Blue Streaks showed no nerves offensively early when getting the ball to start the game. A third down Keller Moten scramble and a lengthy 30-yard completion to Tyren Montgomery got JCU into the red zone before the drive stalled. Colin Schuler ensured JCU didn't walk away empty-handed, nailing a 29-yard field goal at the 10:51 mark.

The Blue Jays responded quickly, as a nice kickoff return started the JHU offense at the 50-yard line. Bay Harvey lofted a pretty 24-yard pass to Robby Enright on a fly route down the left sideline for six. After the extra point by Brad Paxton, JCU trailed 7-3. The next possession was a three-and-out for the visitors.

The deficit increased further with a 37-yard TD completion for the Blue Jays with 3:03 left in the first. Johns Hopkins' 14-3 lead lasted into the second quarter.

The Blue Jays threatened to take control of the game with an 8-play, 61-yard drive ending in six. With 7:41 left in the half, Harvey tossed his third TD pass of the day, this time a 21-yard completion that beat a JCU blitz.

Chunk passes to Cohen Klimak and Montgomery sparked JCU's response. But for the second time in as many red zone drives, the Blue Jays' defense stiffened in the red zone, forcing a fourth down. This trip, the Blue Streaks made a bigtime play, as Montgomery came open in the middle of the end zone for a 6-yard TD pass from Semptimphelter.

After an important stop, JCU drove down the field late in the second quarter, looking to make it a one score game. Semptimphelter led the troops down the field. A Shane Lindstrom catch set Schuler up for a 43-yard field goal as time expired. Schuler nailed it, slimming the margin to 21-13 at halftime.

JCU's defensive front began to make its presence felt to start the second half, heating up Harvey. The visitors got the ball back with a turnover on downs at the JCU 32-yard line following a big defensive stop.

A promising JCU drive, the first of the half, ended in a missed field goal, keeping the deficit at eight points. Hunter Kanotz's first career sack shut down the Blue Jays' next drive. Of note, the rushing games for both teams stalled out, leading to pass-heavy attacks.

A Montgomery catch on a corner route pushed JCU across midfield late in the third. The visitors stood at the JHU 20-yard line to start the fourth, trailing by eight.

Disaster struck on the first play of the fourth quarter, with a loss of 12 yards, leading to a JCU punt. But the JCU defense again stood tall, this time with a leaping Lamar Thomas interception. JCU did nothing with the turnover, though.

A 46-yard Hopkins reception set up the hosts inside the red zone, and after JCU's defense made a stop, the All-American Paxton nailed a 34-yarder to make it a two-score game at 24-13 with 9:19 to play.

On a 3rd and 6 from deep in their own territory, the Blue Streaks climbed out on a 21-yard reception to Cohen Klimak. But a fumble turned the ball back over the Blue Jays, and the hosts upped the lead further to 27-13. Following a JCU turnover on downs, the Blue Jays ran out the clock.

Nick Semptimphelter surpassed 300 yards for the second time this year, completing 29-of-40 passes. Tyren Montgomery played impressively with 12 catches for 152 yards and a touchdown. JCU attempted 21 rushes, finishing with just 4 yards on the ground.

Kenny Grobolsek led the charge on defense with 8 tackles, including 1.5 for loss. Mason Rus tabbed 7 tackles, while Chris Golson nabbed five. Hunter Kanotz had a great day with 2 tackles for loss and a sack.
