Blue Streaks Best Yellow Jackets in Sunday Matinee Showdown

JCU extended its home unbeaten streak vs. BW to 13 matches

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – On a picture-perfect Sunday afternoon, John Carroll Women's Soccer scored a goal in the 78th minute to secure a home win.

After enjoying the better of the play for much of the day, the Blue Streaks got the job done in the end after knocking on the door all game.

With the win at Don Shula Stadium, the Blue Streaks advance to 3-2-1 on the season.

The Blue Streaks managed the game's first true chance in the sixth minute, as Julia Niehaus fired a shot on goal that was turned away by the Yellow Jackets. Overall, JCU enjoyed the better of the play in the first 10 minutes.

Before checking in some fresh legs, the Yellow Jackets started to find some possession. But BW's first shot on goal did not occur until the 27th minute. A free kick gave the visitors a promising chance a minute later, but nothing came of it, either.

A quick turnover nearly led to an icebreaker in the 35th minute, but Sophia Generalovich's shot found the stomach of BW's keeper. JCU also got a nice chance in the 40th minute with Abby Smith sending it in for a BW save.

Right before halftime, John Carroll appeared poised to break the tie. Molly Brown fired in a shot that was stopped by the goalie, but right before time expired, the rebound found Generalovich's foot. The first year's shot clanked off the left post and harmlessly away from danger, ending the half.

JCU enjoyed a 19-3 advantage in shots in the first half, including 7-2 in shots on goal.

Shots were at a premium in the opening portion of the second half. John Carroll enjoyed the better of the play but could not convert many chances into shots on net.

In the 73rd minute, John Carroll brought in fresh legs to counteract the heat. Shortly after, BW started to find momentum, firing in a couple of shots on net, but Martin proved equal.

JCU at last broke through in the 78th minute. Following a short pass off a corner, Lucy Altieri quickly got the ball back and sent in a pass into the box. Gracie Villwock had the presence of mind to charge towards the ball and chested it into the net for her first collegiate goal.

"I knew where to go, I knew Lucy was going to hit the perfect ball. I was ready to follow up on it no matter what it took," said Villwock. "At halftime, we said that we would leave it all on the field for the next 45. We knew our hard work would pay off in the end. We were getting a ton of shots in the first half, so we knew if we kept testing the keeper, one would go for us."

The hosts continued to keep up the pressure, but one goal would be enough. JCU finished with a 24-8 lead in shots.

"I can't wait to keep playing with these girls, I love the team camaraderie," said Villwock. "I am excited to keep winning with them."
