Men's Soccer Battles to a Tie with #17 Case Western Reserve

The Blue Streaks looked strong against a ranked team at Don Shula Stadium

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – In a battle of a young John Carroll Men's Soccer team and a juggernaut Case Western Reserve University side, the Blue Streaks more than held their own.

Against the favored Spartans, ranked #17 in the most recent United Soccer Coaches Division III poll, the Blue Streaks played solidly.

The Cleveland rivals ended the match in a scoreless tie.

Owen Szucs got the start between the pipes and did a strong job overall, though he did not need to make a save until the 89th minute.

John Carroll's most prominent first-half chance occurred in the 30th minute. Rafa De La Barrera clanged a shot off the crossbar. The only shot on target in the first 45 minutes was an Andrew Massucci shot in the fourth minute.

The first half was a possession-based, defensive battle, as could be expected with two skilled teams. Clear chances were at a premium, with JCU leading in shots narrowly, 5-2.

The opening minutes of the second half felt like a tennis match, with the ball pingponging back and forth. De La Barrera managed a shot on goal in the 66th minute, but was turned away.

The Spartans did get a couple of promising opportunities on set pieces in the second half, but JCU's defenders stood strong.

Szucs turned away a close CWRU cross in the 81st minute, knocking it out of harm's way with bravery. The Spartans garnered their best chance of the day in the 89th minute with a shot off a free kick, but Szucs dove on the ball to thwart the threat.

The shot total was a close battle, JCU in slight favor, 8-7. The teams only combined for 3 shots on goal.
