Volleyball Sweeps Baldwin Wallace in Berea for First Time Since 1995

The Blue Streaks enjoyed a statement win in the crosstown rivalry

BEREA – A spirited conference annual rivalry between John Carroll and Baldwin Wallace took a different shape on Friday evening.

Instead of the midseason match, an early non-conference affair kicked off BW's Marcia French Invitational.

In the first meeting between JCU and BW of this new era, the Blue Streaks made a statement, roaring for a 3-0 victory. The visitors won by set scores of 26-24, 25-20, 25-18.

The conquest also had a nice historical aspect for John Carroll Volleyball. This sweep marked the first time since 1995 that the Blue Streaks dispatched of the Yellow Jackets in three sets on their home court. And that was back when sets were played to 15 points.

Baldwin Wallace had several opportunities for an early punch in the first set. The Yellow Jackets managed five and four point runs to threaten to knock JCU off of the first set. But the Blue Streaks proved to be a resilient bunch. A 6-point JCU run powered by three straight Mary Kate Sheehan kills and a 4-point JCU rally powered by back-to-back Grace Jones kills ensured a 21-all tie. BW clawed out to set point at 24-23, but JCU fired off three straight to not only stave off defeat but snatch victory, concluded with a Sheehan kill.

"We never lost focus, even when we were down several points," said Head Coach Michele Benoit. "The comeback led to a positive pace for the rest of the match. There was great team energy from start to finish."

While the Yellow Jackets kept it close for much of the second set and tied it several times, JCU never trailed after 1-0. A pair of Sheehan kills authored a 4-point JCU stroll to make it 22-17, and while JCU did allow three consecutive points to keep it interesting, JCU finished things off, again with a Sheehan kill.

With Natalie Glowe on a roll and Baldwin Wallace struggling with errors, committing 9 attack errors in the third set, JCU never felt much doubt. Showing killer instinct, aided by BW mistakes, the Blue Streaks corralled a 7-2 run to end the evening.

Sheehan led the attack with 14 kills, while Glowe enjoyed "consistent play both offensively and with ball control," as Benoit noted. Tess Humphrey and Haley Nicholson played productively, running the offense effectively with 17 and 12 assists, respectively. Olivia Mogyordy (25 digs) and GG Beuselinck showed good ball control to help the offense, as well.
